: 쎄미콜론은 and/or/but의 대신으로 생각할 수 있다. 세미콜론이 바르게 사용되었는지 알아보는 방법은 그 자리에 마침표를 넣어서 같은 작용을 하면 맞게 쓴 것이다. 쎄미콜론 다음에는 소문자로 시작한다.
- 두개의 독립절 사이에 : I graduated with Honors from Harvard University; I also took a degree at Princeton.
- 독립절과 접속부사 사이에 : I am not working at the moment; however, I just received a job offer from IBM.
예문 1. I read in the latest e-mail that you are looking for someone to tutor you in the Korean language; well, I am your man.

- 종속접속사(when, if, since, etc.)가 나오는 종속절(종속절이 주절 뒤에 나올때는 종속접속사 앞에 콤마를 쓰지 않음) : When John opened the door, he found his girlfriend standing there.
- 문장 처음에 부사나 부사구(In general, Indeed), 접속부사(nevertheless, however) 뒤에 : I can’t promise to have the book written by tomorrow; however, I will do my best.

- 동격구의 앞과 뒤에(이름 같은 짧은 동격구에는 콤마가 불필요) : My girl friend, whose name is Jill, works very hard. My girlfriend Jill works very hard.
