   wasn’t enough demands for its product.

        (=A need for)

 

The train was late, but nobody knew the

   reason for the delay. (Not reason of)

The cause of the explosion is unknown.

 

Last year was a bad one for the company.

  There was a big drop in sale.

There has been a marked increase in the

   use of firearms.

 

The accident was my fault, so I had to pay for

   the damage to the other car.

I was surprised at her reaction to my

They have always been very nice to me.

 

My parents are mad at me for disobeying

   them.

He’s late again. It’s typical of him to keep

   everything waiting.

 

Linda is married to an American? (Not with)

                    married/engaged to

Linda is married with three children.

 

I don’t want to be dependent on anybody.

She is financially independent of her family.

 

He got very angry and started shouting at

   me.                             Shout at sb (when you’re angry)

He shouted to me from the other side of the

   street.           Shout to sb (so that they can hear you)

 

Somebody threw an egg at the politician.

Lisa shouted “Catch” and threw the keys to

   me from the window.

 

Can you explain this word to me?

                    (Not explain me this word)

I explained to them why I was worried.

      Explain/describe(to sb) why/how/what

 

He’s very selfish. He doesn’t care about

   other people.  

   Care about sth/sb (= think sb/sth is important)

Would you care for a cup of coffee?

Alan is 85 and lives alone. He needs

   somebody to care for him.

    Care for sth/sb = 1) like sth

                                2) make sure sb is safe and well

 

I’ve searched the house for my keys, but I

   still can’t find them.

    Search (a person/a place) for sth

 

I haven’t seen her since she left (home) for

   the office this morning. (Left to the office)

    Leave (a place) for another place

 

I dreamed about you last night.

What does it mean if you dream about/of

  mountains?             Dream about/of (=while asleep)

I wouldn’t dream of asking them for money.

I often dreamed of being famous when I was

  younger.                   Dream of (=think of, imagine)

 

I’ve thought about what you said, and I’ve

  decided to take your advice.

  Think about sth (=you consider it, you concentrate your

                               mind on it)

That’s a good idea. Why didn’t I think of that?

What did you think of the film?

   Think of sth = 1) the idea comes to your mind 

                          2) ask or give an opinion

   But the difference is very small!

 

I’m glad you reminded me about the

   meeting, I had completely forgotten about it.

   remind sb about (= tell sb not to forget)

Look at this picture of Richard. Who does he

   remind you of?

   Remind sb of(= cause sb to remember)

 

Sue accused me of being selfish.

They accused me of telling lies.

  (=I was accused of telling lies)

Some students are suspected of cheating

   on the exam.

Nobody suspected the general of being a

   spy.

  (=The general was suspected of being a spy)

   accuse/suspect sb of

 

We complained to the manager of the

   restaurant about the food.

   Complain (to sb) about (=to say that you’re not

                                            satisfied with)

We called the doctor because George was

   complaining of a pain in his stomach.

   Complain of a pain, an illness etc (= to say that you

                                                              have a pain etc)   

 

Vicky warned me about the traffic, she said

   it would be bad.

   Warn sb about sb/sth (which is bad, dangerous)

   (Not warn sb of sb)

Scientists have warned us about/of the

   effects of global warming.

   Warn sb about/of a danger, sth bad that might happen

    later

 

His parents don’t approve of what he does,

   but they can’t stop him.

He doesn’t approve of swearing.

I don’t approve of people killing animals for

   fun.

    Approve/disapprove of

 

We had an enormous meal. It consisted of

   seven courses.                      

 

Michael’s salary is very low. It isn’t enough to

   live on.

We lived on very little when we first got

   married.

I have to live on 300$ a month.

   Live on money/food

 

I congratulated her on being admitted to law

   school.

I congratulated Ann on getting a new job.

   Congratulate/compliment sb on

 

I didn’t have enough money to pay for the

   meal. (Not pay the meal)

    Pay (sb) for

I didn’t have enough money to pay the rent.

   Pay a bill / a fine / tax / rent / a sum of money

 

Everybody blamed me for the accident.

   (=Everybody said that I was to blame for the

      accident)

    Blame sb/sth for  /  sb is to blame for

Everybody blamed the accident on me.

   Blame (a problem etc) on

He lost control of the car and crashed into a

   wall.                              Crash/drive/bump/run into

 

 

The school provides all its students with

   books.                               Provide/supply sb with

 

Claire’s mother told her off for wearing dirty

   shoes in the house.

   Tell sb off (= speak angrily to sb because they did sth

                         Wrong)

 

I put some pictures up on the wall.

   (↔I didn’t like the picture, so I took it down.)

    put sth up(on …) take sth down (from)

 

Some old houses were torn down to make

   room for the new shopping mall.

   Tear sth down (= to pull or knock down a building, a

                               wall)

A: Why did you cut down the tree in your

   yard?

   B : I didn’t. It was blown down in the storm

   last week.

They were able to put out the fire before the

   house burned down.

   Burn down (= be destroyed by fire)
