Is there any difference between the expressions different from, different than, and different to? Is one of the three ‘more correct’ than the others?
In practice, different from is by far the most common of the three, in both British and American English:
We want to demonstrate that this government is different from previous governments. (British English)
This part is totally different from anything else that he's done. (American English)
Different than is mainly used in American English:
Teenagers certainly want to look different than their parents.
Different to is much more common in British English than American English:

엔젤//영국에서 산다면 선택의 문제라고 봐도 되겠지만, 최근 미국에서 different from을 쓰는 것은 마치 고어체 영어를 쓰는 느낌을 줄 정도로 거의 쓰이지 않고 different than이 완전히 거의 장악하는 수준에 이르렀음....
아주 쉽게 말하자면, 미국에서 영어를 구사할 땐 그냥 different than이라고 써야 정상....different from도 쓰이긴 하지만.....아주 딱딱한 느낌마저 줄 정도로 거의 안 쓰이게 되었음

나도 한국에서 배운 문법지식때문에 항상 different from을 쓰고 다녔고 오히려 different than을 쓰는 미국인이 틀렸다고 생각했었는데....현실은 그게 아니었음...미국에선 아주 잘배운 교수 정치가 언론가들마저도 different than을 쓸 정도로 different than은 거의 공식적으로 맞는 표현이 될 지경에 이르렀음

음..? different from이 고어체에 가까울정도로 안쓰인다니.. 그건 아닌 것 같네요. different from 쓰는 걸 더 많이 봐온 것 같은데요..

foster//위에 올린 영문자료에서는 미국에선 different than이 different from보다 2배정도로 많이 사용된다고 하지만, 체감상으로는 그보다 훨씬 더 높은 것아서 그렇게 설명하게 된 것임
different from이 고어체 느낌이 나는건 맞음. 보통 대화할때 신세대는 different than 을 자주쓰니까.
아마도 최근에 급격하게 대체가 되어서 그런 듯

different than을 쓰는 것은 알고 있었는데, 빈도수가 저만큼 많은 것이었고 또 실생활에선 different from이 고어체같은 느낌이 든다는데에 충격을 받았네요ㅋ 관치주의적인 방식은 모르겠고 짜장면과 같은 케이스가 아닐까~합니다.
