그 분책의 열렬한 지지자였는 데 우연히 인터넷 기사에서 그 분의 근황이 보이네여  

허접한 영어이지만....그 분의 가르침을 되씹는 다는 기분으로

감히 영역에 도전해 본다.

 

존나 허접인 영어로 할려니 쪽 팔리지만,.,그래도 시도는 해본다 

(근데...금칙어가 왜이라 만냐?....글 올리는데 존나 짜증난다...ㅠㅠ)


매일 티베트 밀교 경전들을 읽고 번역하며 인생의 후반부를 불서 번역가이자 재가 수행자로 살고 있는 <영어순해>의 저자 김영로 선생(72)은 “불자들이야 말로 영어를 꼭 공부해야 합니다. 그래야 영어로 번역된 양질의 불서를 직접 읽으며 공부할 수 있지요. 제가 10년 동안 불교공부를 해보니까 결국 저는 바로 이 공부를 하기 위해 평생동안 치열하게 영어공부를 해온 것 같다는 생각이 듭니다.”라고 설명했다. 


잉글리시 master, Mr Kim Young Ro said " Buddhists shall learn 잉글리시. That is why they can study Buddhism by reading

a great quality of Buddhist scriptures translated into 잉글리시. My ten years' learning of Buddhism brings me to the belief that I have

studied the language so ardently simply to be ushered into the world of Buddhism". He is the author of 영어순해 and is now leading

a Buddhist life reading and translating esoteric buddhism books everyday as both a translator of Buddhism books and an ascetic.


김영로 선생은 7080세대 대학생이라면 대부분 영어공부의 필수품으로 들고 다닌 빨간색 <vocabulary22000>과 <영어순해>를 펴내며 베스트셀러화 시킨 영어 참고서계의 살아있는 전설이다. 이렇게 평생 영어 교재 편찬에만 전념해 온 그가 6년전부터 영한대역 <행복수업>과 <한영 보현행자의 서원> 등을 출간하며 문서 포교를 해오고 있어 불교계는 물론 세상을 또한번 놀라게 했다. 

  

Mr Kim published <vocabulary22000> and <영어순해> that were a must in the school bags of those who went to university during the period of 1970s and 1980s, a living legend in the world of 잉글리시 education. It is a big surprise for him to have put into print <행복수업>, <한영 보현행자의 서원>, etc from six years ago.


특히 명상 언어집 <김영로의 행복수업>은 티베트 밀교(密敎)인 금강승(탄트라) 불교의 가르침을 담은 책으로, 영어로 된 밀교 경전과 잠언집에서 김씨가 전하고픈 내용을 추려 엮었다. 평생 영어로 된 글 읽는 법을 가르친 업인지, 무상법(無上法)을 설하는 이 책도 영한대역, 원문과 번역문과 해설 순으로 정리했다


Above all, <김영로의 행복수업> which is from his own meditation, contains the lessons from esoteric buddhism. To write this book,

he extracted essential lines that he intended to deliver, from esoteric buddhism books made in 잉글리시.  

Probably due to his karma of having taught 잉글리시 over his entire life, this book was also compiled, as typically found in his 잉글리시 books,  in the order of 영한대역, 원문과 번역문과 해설 .


영어 교사, 외국어 전문학원 강사 등으로 살아온 김씨는 1983년 쓴 수험서 <영어순해>로 일약 유명해졌다. 이후 펴낸 교재마다 불티나게 팔려 나갔고, 그 가운덴 밀리언셀러도 있다. 그런 그가 2002년부터 경기도 광주시 퇴촌면 관음리의 인적 드문 곳에 터를 잡고 수행승과 다름없이 살고 있다.


With long years of career as an 잉글리시 teacher, he suddenly became a big star with his book of <영어순해>, written in 1983.

Since then, his books were all best sellers, some of which million sellers too.

Though, he had started to take a root in a very rural village in 경기도 광주시 퇴촌면 관음리 around the year of 2002, and leaded an ascetic life.


추상미술을 전공한 부인도 탱화 그리는 불모(佛母)가 됐다. 종교적인 전원 생활이 떠오를 수도 있지만, 실은 난방비 아끼느라 실내 온도도 낮게 해놓고 사는 등 검소한 삶을 살고 있다.


His wife, majored in abstract arts, also became a buddhist drawing buddhist pictures. Their life is very simple and frugal to a degree that they set indoor temperature low to save money.


그동안 인세로 많이 벌었음직도 할텐데 그 돈은 다 어쨌냐는 조심스런 물음에 김씨는 “이곳 저곳 나가는 돈이 많아서 경제적으로 나는 예나 지금이나 하층민”이라고 답했다. 그는 개인사에 대해서는 무척 말을 아꼈는데 그의 주변을 탐문해보니 “모두 사람들 도와주는 보시행 펼치다 그렇게 됐다”고 입을 모았다.


Asked where all the money is gone that you have made from your many bestselling books, he answered, "I've been always poor because the money is gone here and there". Actually, he is reluctant to say about his personal history. However, the words around him have it that he lives so simply because he has done a lot of charties"


김씨는 “참 희한하지요. 이곳으로 이사오기전 서울 구기동서 오해 살았는데 그때는 불교를 잘 몰랐습니다. 그런데 이 관음리로 오기전 제 와이프가 관세음보살님 꿈을 꾸었어요. 그 이후 인근에 계신 탄트라의 구루(스승) 법사님을 만나 밀교 공부를 하게 됐습니다. 지금 생각해 보면 불보살들이 나를 수행의 길로 이끈 것 같습니다. 지금보다 행복했던 적은 없어요. 부처님 법을 공부하는 이 책 한 권이 저에겐 빌게이츠의 수많은 재산보다도 더 값지다고 생각합니다. 늦게나마 이렇게 부처님을 만난 것은 제 인생에서 가장 큰 행운이라고 생각합니다. 세상엔 풍족하지만 불행한 사람들이 더 많은 것 같아요. 그래서 행복한 공부를 나누고자 이 책을 썼습니다.”


"Too stragely, before moving to here, I had just little knowledge of buddhism. But, just before coming to here, my wife dreamed of 관세음보살. Since then, I happened to meet with a guru nearby and started to learn about esoteric buddhism. I believe now that buddhist saints led me in this way. I have never been happier than thesedays. This one Buddhist book is more precious than money. It is my biggest luck to meet the Buddha, although very late. There seems to be so many people who are affluent but miserable. That is why I wrote this book with an aim to share the happiness of this kind", he added.


하루 10시간 가까이 수행한다는 그에게 아직도 불자들에게 다소 생소한 밀교에 대해 묻자 “부처님께서 준비된 제자들에게만 은밀하게 전수한 가르침입니다. 즉 소수 정예자들인 엘리트들을 깨달음(空性)에 이르게 해 큰 기쁨(大樂)을 누릴 수 있도록 인도하는 가르침”이라고 설명했다. 상근기에서만 공부할 수 있어 초심자들이 이해하기에는 어려움이 많다는 것이다.


He studies and meditate for almost ten hours everyday. We asked him about esoteric buddhism that sounds somewhat strange even to ordinary buddhists. He explained on it as "Esoteric buddhism is the lessons that were secretely taught to well prepared followers by the buddha. In other words, ir may be taken as a lesson leading just few elite buddhists to a big enlightenment and joyfulness", adding that is is very difficult for the beginners to understand as it can be studied only in 상근기.


이어 그는 “욕망과 고통마저 깨달음의 에너지로 환원해 무한한 자유를 향해 가는 것이 밀교입니다.”라고 덧붙였다.


He went on to add that esoteric buddhism is transforming even aspiration and pains into the source of enlightenment, heading for the world of infinite freedom"


사람은 누구나 건강하고 행복한 삶을 꿈꾼다. 하지만 어느 순간 행복인 줄 알고 쫓아갔던 것이 불행의 씨앗이 되기도 하는 것을 경험하면서 갈팡질팡한다. 그 뒤 ‘진정한 행복이란 무엇일까’ 고민하며 길을 찾아 헤맨다. 오늘날을 살아가는 사람들의 보편적 고민은 ‘행복’이다. 미국이나 영국에서는 이 고민을 해결하기 위해서 학교에서 ‘행복수업’을 실시하는 학교가 늘고 있고, 인기도 높다고 한다. 지금은 행복 수업이 필요한 시대인 것만큼은 분명하다. 바로 김영로 선생이 지금 공부하는 탄트라가 행복수업이라는 것이다.


Every human being dreams of the happy life. However, from time to time, we go astray amid the miseries from what we considered the happiness one day. Then, we use to be in search of the true happiness. Almost all of us, living today, think about the happiness. In the U.S or Britain, the schools have time to teach the happiness to give the answer. This era in which we live is apparently requring some lectures about the happiness. Tantra, which Mr Kim is studying, may be one of the lectures.


영어로 된 수백권의 불서를 읽고 공부하는 것도 바로 행복해지기 위해서다. 이제 그의 관심은 불교와 영어를 동시에 배우게 하는 것이다. 영어로 된 불서에는 기존 번역본보다 불교에 대한 정보가 더 많아 이를 소개하고 싶다는 욕구가 크다. 여기에 기존 번역 불서들을 훑어보니 오류가 너무 많다는 것도 또 하나의 이유다.


The reasons we read hundreds of buddhist books made in 잉글리시 are also to be happier. Now, he is interested in learning both buddhism and 잉글리시. He is strongly driven to introduce buddhism books made in 잉글리시 because they contain more information than buddhism books translated in other languages. It is also another reason that the buddhism books translated in other languages contain mistaken translations, too much.



“영어 불서에는 용어의 엄격함과 비논리적인게 없습니다. 지혜와 깨달음의 불교엔 논리의 치밀성이 있지요. 바로 이들간의 결합은 논리력에 달려있습니다. 그런데 요즘 번역본과 원본을 대조하며 공부하는데 이름만 대면 알만한 유명 출판사의 베스트셀러 번역서들에서도 오류가 많이 눈에 띱니다. 부분 오류는 논리적 오류로 이어지기 때문에 영어 실력이 부족한게 원인이라기보다는 치밀한 논리력과 사고력이 부족해서 생긴 문제인 것 같습니다. 불서들은 물론 불교적 지식이 뒷받침돼지 않기 때문이기도 하지요.”


"The buddhism books made in 잉글리시 have the very correct usage of words and logicality as well. There is the precision of logicality in the buddhism, an incarnation of wisdom and enlightenment. The connectability bewteen them are highly dependent on the logicality. However, I come to conclude there are so many mistakes by comparatively reading the original and the translated. Partial mistakes are often leading to logical mistakes, so it is not because the translaor lacks 잉글리시 but because he falls short of the power of logicality and thinking. Of course, it is also partly because buddhim books have to be understood on the basis of buddhist knowledge"


그는 불교의 치밀한 논리가 정확성과 연결돼야 한다고 생각한다. 번역본의 오류는 ‘번역의 재번역’이란 두 단계 번역 과정에서 비롯된다고 보고 있다. 그래서 그는 티베트 불교의 영어 번역에 관심이 높다.


He believes that the delicate logics of buddhism have to be connected to the correctness as such. The mistakes often found in translated versions are, according to his view, originating from the two steps translation that means the translation of the former translation. That is why he is highly interested in the translation of Tibet buddhism.


“산스크리트어와 빨리어로 된 경전은 13세기 경 이슬람의 침공으로 소실된 경우가 많지만 티베트는 외세침입이 거의 없어서 경전들이 보관이 잘 돼 있는 편이며, 산스크리트어 자체를 모델로 만들었기 때문에 정밀하게 번역이 돼 있는 편입니다. 또한 티베트 스님들이 영어권에 들어가 영어경전을 많이 제작하기도 했지요. 티베트어 경전이 아닌 경우 영어불서를 많이 읽지 않으면 상징적 언어들에 대한 이해가 어려운 부분이 많습니다. 그래서 영역 불서를 많이 읽지 않으면 밀교가 전하는 성역에 들어갈 수 없습니다.”


"The buddhist books made in Sanskrit and 빨리어 were mostly undermimed by the Islamic invasions around 13th century, but Tibet was almost immume to outside attacks, so that it's Buddhist books could be preserved better and in addition, it's Buddhist books were translated directly from Sanskrit, the quality of whose translation seems more correct. Tibet's monks have went to the western and joined in publishing many 잉글리시 Buddhist books. If not Tibet's Buddhist books, there are lots of difficulties in catching the meanings of symbolic words with other than the Buddhist books translated in 잉글리시. If you do not read the Buddhist books translated in 잉글리시, you will not be able to open the door through which you are allowed to take a foot in the sacred area that esoteric buddhism contains."


그는 번역 작업도 일종의 수행이라고 생각한다. 정확히 번역하려면 더 많이 공부해야 하기 때문이다. 그렇다면 우리 불자들이 영어공부를 하려면 어떤 방법으로 해야 할까를 물었다.


He considers a work of translation as a kind of practicing ascetism. It is because you must study more if you want to translate more accurately. Now, we asked him how buddhists can study 잉글리시....


“우선 영어에 대한 두려움을 극복하는 것입니다. 그리고 글의 순서대로 이해하는 것이 핵심이지요. 읽으면서 이해되도록 반복적으로 연습을 하면 됩니다. 눈으로 먼저 보게 되면 감각이 걸어 잠기고 닫혀버립니다. 즉 자신의 책 제목 처럼 ‘문맥순해’를 강조했다. 이런 방식으로 하면 영어경전 읽기도 쉽게 할 수 있습니다. 문장을 두려움을 갖고 쳐다보지 말고 알고 있는 내용처럼 내려다보는 자세가 영어를 쉽게 풀이하는 기본 방식이지요.”

그는 이런 방법으로 영어 불서를 읽다보니 불교 공부에 빠졌다고 경험을 말한다.


"First of all, you need to overcome your sense of fear over 잉글리시. It is essential for you to understand in the oder of words, when reading. You need to practice constantly so that you can understand at the same time of reading. If you relies on your eyes too much, your reading instincts will be shut completely. He highlights "문맥순해" like the title of one of his bestselling books. If you can get get accustomed to this way, you also can read buddhist books so easily. Don't cast a fearful look at 잉글리시 sentences, instead, just read as if you had already acquainted with them. It is the way simplest to go easy on 잉글리시 reading".


He recalled the experience, saying that it was his reading  capacity that had indulged him with the Buddhist world.


뒤에 몇 문장 더 있는 데 길어서 요까지만 하자...

뒤는 앞에 내용과 중언부언적 성격이 있어서.....지금까지 내용만으로도 충분히 핵심이 전달될 거다...김영로 선생님의 영어순해.....본 갤러들 많냐? 난 한번은 봤다....


책이 존나 어려운데 내용은 그야말로 보석이다......다만 설명이 워낙 간결해서,,,

불도를 닦듯이 명상하는 마음으로,,,한구절씩 깊이 생각하지 않는 다면,,,,별 무효과다...


글고,,,그 책 제대로 소화할라치면,,,,영어기본기가 이미 갖추어져 있어야 하거던...적어도 성문기본 정도는 공부해놔야....봐서 이해할수 있을 듯 싶다...아뭏든...볼 놈들은 보고 안볼놈들은 마는데

영어순해 머리글에 나와있는 영어공부 학습방법론은 한번 시간나면 봐봐라,,,,,존나 핵심을 찌르고 있응께,,,,


그 글 하나면.,,,,기존 방법론 상당부분 커버하고도 남는다....아무튼 금과옥조처럼 여기고 있다,,,,내는.....
