한마디로 영어 공부할려면 제데로, 글구 열심히 라는 말임

내 개인적 의견으로는 한국사람이 성문종합이나 맨투맨 종합 정도만 마스터하면

아카데믹한 영어에 전혀 스트레스 받을 일은 없다고 봄....물론, 마스터하는게 장난은 아니지만...

 

그런데...조선시대 성리학자들도,....소학 같은 존나 기초적인 유교경전(경전급에도 못드는 책이지만..사실)을

평생에 걸쳐 최소 수백번....수천번 이상 읽고 ....그 과정에서 자연스레 암송이 가능토록 했다는 것을 아는지....

그들은 문법 보다는 문리를 튼 것이지...

물론 한문의 문법은 영어에 비하면 문법이랄것도 없을 정도로 심플하긴 하지...혹자는 한문은 문법이 없다 라고도 하니깐..

그러나 원리는 공통인 거여....안그려?

 

아래의 영어원문은 1960년대 서양의 사상계의 흐름을 바꾼 미국의 유태인 인류학자 클리포드 기어츠의 가장 유명한 저서중의 일부를 발췌한 것인데

영미권에서 대학학부 이상의 학위를 취득하고자 하는 사람들은 이러한 형태의 아주 꼬아질대로 꼬아져서 문장을 여러번 읽어봐야 그 의미파악이 되는 학자들의 글들을 이해할 수 있어야 함. 일상생활이 아닌 학문계에선 당연히 자신이 공부하는 분야의 대가들의 글을 읽고 이해를 해야 하는데, 문제는 이런 대가들의 글은 보통 굉장히 현학적이고 어려운 단어들이 즐비한 경우가 많고 거기에 문장 자체가 많이 꼬아져서 문장의 형태를 정확히 파악하는데 시간이 걸리는 경우가 허다함.

the western philosophy in 1960's. Every one inteding to get a bachelor degree or more in 잉글리시 speaking countries should be able to understand

such high level of academic writings which are usually very complicated and require a lot of thinking to get to the points.

Those writings are, all too often, a combination of the words which are very exaggerative of the writer's knowledge and unnecesarily difficult.

What is worse, the structures are typically unclear or poorly organized, so that it takes too long to have a picture of how the sentences are

constructed.

하지만, 어휘는 사전 찾아가면서 어떻게 해결이 된다고 하지만, 문장의 구조는 사전을 본다고 해결이 되는 것이 아님. 그럼 그걸 가능하게 하는 것은? 

문법임. 아주 정확한 문법지식이 필요한데, 그 문법지식의 수준은 성문종합 맨투맨 종합수준의 문법서들을 넘어서는 경우가 많을 정도. 그래서 많은 한국유학생들이 (특히 인문사회계열)이 높은 뜻을 가지고 유학을 왔으나 이런 기본적인 문제가 극복이 안되어서 - 현실을 깨닫고 - 처음 유학을 올 때의 꿈은 버리고 그냥 무슨 수를 써서라도 논문 통과만 되도 성공이라는 마음가짐으로 유학생활을 꾸역꾸역하는 경우가 태반. (고로, 이들은 유학을 가서 높은 수준 - 또는 최소한 학문 선진국인 영미권에서 만족시킬만한 지식이나 이해를 가지고 오는데 실패했다는 뜻임. 그리고 현지 기준으로는 기대에 못미치는 학자적 퍼포먼스를 보여주고 돌아온 이들이 한국의 지식인이 되는 것이고... 

이러한 어려움을 단순히 인문사회과학계열의 것으로 한정지워서 혹시나 상경계나 이공계를 전공하는 사람들은 안심하지 않기를 바람 

 

You can make it if the problem is words, as you can refer to a dictionary.

But, it is not the case for the structures, though. Then, how possible?

Grammar, very exact knowledge of grammar.

The grammatical level required here is mostly over the level of 성문종합 맨투맨 종합.

So, many korean students, coming to the US with an ambitious dream, are just struggling with basic language problems and

end up abadoning their initial dreams but just try to get by with a mere goal to make their papers approved, no matter how.

(It means that most of them fail to get on to the academic level that would be regarded as great. But anyway, they are going to be an

intelligent in korean society in spite of under-performances up there)

 

Don't take this kind of problem as unique to 인문사회과학계열


이런 문제에서 가장 자유로운 분야가 이공계열이긴 하지만, 그래도 영문법의 부족으로 인해서 네이티브들이 쉽게 쉽게 얻는 정보를 얻지 못하는 불리함 때문에 조금씩 조금씩 뒤쳐지는 분야가 생겨나게 되고, 그들보다 좀 더 어려운 영작 실력이 요구되는 - 하지만 인문사회계열보다는 덜 요구되는 - MBA나 경제학과 학생들은 비록 아래의 예문같은 어려운 문장구조나 어휘가 필요하진 않지만 그래도 자신의 의견을 논문으로 정확하게 피력하기 위해선 정확한 문법실력을 기반으로 한 작문실력이 요구되기 때문에, "나는 경제학/경영학이니깐 영어는 대충하고 현지에서 열심히만 공부하면 되는거야"라고 생각하는 것은 실패의 위험성을 높히고 그리고 자신이 유학을 갈 때 얻고자 하는 것만큼의 것을 얻지 못하게 하는 것으로 작용할 수 있다는 것을 명심해 두었으면 함! 

 

Actually, the feilds of natural science is more free from the peoblem. But still, they also get behind due to the language handicaps under which they are not

able to absorb information as fast as natives, which makes korean students retarded gradually from certain areas.

On the other hand, when it comes to MBA or economic courses, it is about halfway between 이공계열 and 인문사회계열.

However, MBA or economic courses also push you into producing your own writing in clearity and gramatical accuracy.

So, don't foirget that if you think you need just a little 잉글리시 then you will get on the flight back to korea with just a part of what you intended to

acheive back then when coming to study in the beginning stage.

근데 제석천님 넘 심각함...좀 릴렉스 해도 될 듯 싶넹....영어가 성경공부도 아니구

편하게 즐기면서 하면 더 좋을듯....아님 말구....
