Sometimes you need to behold something innocent and beautiful to find peace, to break free of the dark forces that infest the life of the common man. And when you do, you might just be able to ignore, and perhaps even rise above, the hate, the stench, and the ugliness born of someone`s self-loathing you find in some of the darkest, direst, most ungraceful of all places.


Irène Cahen d'Anvers, depicted above at age 11 when she posed for the Renoir portrait in 1883, survived the holocaust and died a natural death at age 91 in 1963.


It was a minor, yet sad, fact that she had to have converted to Christianity for that to happen, but nobody had known what was to come later, making it a random event that worked in her favor. Her siblings, children and grandchildren, however, were not as fortunate, making her the sole survivor in the Jewish side of her family. How did she endure the last score years of her life?


One previous evening, I went out to dinner in the bustling entertainment district downtown and was amazed to find a girl looking just like her as if she had popped right out of the very Renoir painting after 132 years of sitting at that pose. How refreshing!
