여러분들이 빠는 소위 캐주얼 체. 얼마나 한국에 민주적 사회관계가 찾아보기 힘들면 이토록 캐주얼을 빠는지 애잔함 ㅠㅠ

 Text of Gettysburg Address


Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.


Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.


But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. 

It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us

—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion

—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain

—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom

—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.


이 글을 읽지 못하는 것은 아마도 유창함이 문제가 아닐 것이다. 아마도 이 링컨 연설 속에 담긴 사상이 수용되지 않기 때문이겠지.

가령 다음과 같은 북아일랜드에서 발생한 테러 사건과 이를 합의에 의해 수정한 서구인들의 가치관에 공감할 수 없는 금수와 같은 의식.


어린이는 보호받아야 할 천부적 권리가 있다.와 같은 인류가 보편적으로 소중하다고 여기는 기본 가치관의 생각 자체가 없는 것.
