To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society. I am not solitary whilst I read and write, though nobody is with me. One might think the atmosphere was made transparent with this design, to give man, in the heavenly bodies, the perpetual presence of the sublime.

챗지피티랑 제미나이 말로는 바로 뒤의 to give man, in the heavenly bodies, the perpetual presence of the sublime. 을 가르킨다고 하는데 this가 이런 식으로 뒷 문장을 가르키는 건 처음 봐서요
This design이 아니고 with this design 아닌가요? 그 전치사구가 앞의 동사구를 수식하고 this는 지시 형용사로 design을 수식하고요. 아닌가요?
수식 관계는 이게 맞긴한데.. this design이 의미상으로 뭐와 대치되는지 알 수가 없어서요 this design이라고 하면 앞에 나온 어떤 "계획/목적"을 대신하는 단어가 되야할텐데 앞에 그 어떤 것도 "계획/목적"이라고 볼 만한 문장이 없어서요
대기가 투명하게 만들어진 것은 바로 이런 의도(design) 때문일지도 모른다. 인간에게 천체 속에서 끊임없이 계속되는 숭고함의 존재를 느낄 수 있도록 하는 것 말이다.
