I read a book called Holes. It was written by Louis Sachar. The book is set at Camp Green Lake, in the middle of the Texas desert. The main character of this book is a boy named Stanley, who is falsely accused of stealing shoes and ends up serving time at Camp Green Lake.

There were other boys serving time there, and various incidents occurred between Stanley and other boys. The boys’ main job there was to dig a hole the width of shovel all day long.

In exchange for teaching Zero to read and write, Zero dug Stanley’s hole. One day, Mr. Pendanski, a middle manager, learned of this and became angry. Feeling aggrieved, Zero deserted camp, and Stanley grew concerned about Zero’s departure. Stanley was worried about Zero, who might have been thirsty in the middle of the desert, so he tried to steal the camp’s truck and went out to find Zero. However, Stanley was inexperienced at driving a truck and crashed it into a hole. After crawling out of the truck, Stanley had to run away from the middle manager who came to catch him. As a result, Stanley also ended up abandoning the camp. While wandering the desert, Stanley met Zero, and their journey together resonated deeply with me.

After many twists and turns, they returned to the camp, where Zero secretly dug a hole. There, he found a briefcase with Stanley’s great grandfather’s name on it. Inside, they found documents worth approximately 2 million dollars. The camp’s Warden was arrested, and Zero and Stanley were rescued, and they split the 2 million dollars equally. Stanley’s name was cleared, and the two were invited to a party, where they enjoyed a happy ending.

This novel tells the story where Camp Green Lake was located transformed from a river into a desert without a drop of water, over a century ago. At its core, the theme of racism is central.

Ultimately, I felt this book embodies the author’s message of friendship and the pursuit of a world free of racism.
