헤러시 소설들 중에서도 오래된 것들 몇 가지는 읽다보면 종종 이해가 잘 안되는 부분이 나오기도 하고 뒤에 나온 서술과 잘 연결되지 않거나 규모면에서 납득이 안되는 묘사가 종종 나오기도 함. 2부 펄스 갓에서 호루스의 최정예 쥬스타린이 고작 몇십 명이라는 서술이나, 사썬이 프로스페로에 1만명뿐이었고 살아남은 건 1000명 남짓이란 것 등등.

왜 이런가 하면 퍼스트 헤러틱 이전까지 나온 소설들은 알란 블라이가 헤러시 총괄로 임명되기 전에 집필된 것들이라 알란이 나중에 재구성한 헤러시의 규모가 아닌 구 설정집 Tales of Heresy를 참고해서 썼기 때문임. 퍼스트 헤러틱 전후로 소설 간의 연계나 헤러시의 규모가 확 달라지는 건 이런 이유 때문.

ADB말론 퍼스트 헤러틱 이전에 나온 소설들(예외로 프로스페로 번은 출판이 늦게 된 케이스라 전자에 포함)의 경우 기본적으로 이야기의 줄기는 정사에 들어가지만 군단 규모나 사건 타임라인 같은 건 구설정 중심으로 집필된 거라 포월쪽이 좀 더 정확하다고 함. 그렇다보니 프로스페로 전투나 이스트반 사건과 관련된 전투 규모 및 사건 순서와 관련해서 소설과 블랙북의 차이가 유독 두드러짐. 특히 맥닐이 아웃캐스트 데드에서 마그누스의 경고 관련으로 타임라인에 푸짐하게 똥을 싸놓는 바람에 알란과 다른 작가들이 이걸 바로잡느라고 엄청 고생했음. 본인도 수습한다고 부랴부랴 해명용 외전을 내기도 했고.

Always worth remembering that A Thousand Sons and Prospero Burns were using the old, much smaller Legion numbers that Tales of Heresy, the 5th Edition Chaos Codex, and later HH novels avoided. (And some earlier HH novels, too.) So they're not reliable sources for Legion numbers.

Forge World is a reliable source, as are all of the novels from The First Heretic onward, excluding Prospero Burns (which was written pre-TFH, but delayed). It's also worth considering that it's in no way a new change. The 2007 Chaos Codex... The ancient HH art books and the old Sabretooth card game, etc... So the figures were rolled out well over a decade over now, in multiple sources, but the early HH novels had very little continuity oversight. In one of the planning meetings for TFH, I asked about getting consistent Legion numbers, which is part of why the HH series suddenly starts adhering to the canonical figures around that time.
