On Friday, May 24, a fully packed Dvořák Hall of Rudolfinum attended a recital by the star South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho. Cho is the winner of the 2015 Chopin Competition in Warsaw, but this can be seen as the culmination of his earlier competitive successes in Hamamatsu, Moscow, and Tel Aviv. A pivotal moment in his career came in 2017 when he stepped in for the ailing Lang Lang during a tour with the Berlin Philharmonic. The previous year, he also performed at the Prague Spring festival. It is no longer true that Asian performers shine only through exceptional technique, which sometimes lacks expressiveness. With training at the best European music institutions, they gain insights into European music and culture in general, leading to remarkable artistic creations. Seong-Jin Cho is one of these shining examples. After studying in Seoul, he went to the Paris Conservatory to study with Michel Béroff.

The pianist divided his program into two parts—Ravel and Liszt—and intriguingly connected them expressively by adding almost impressionistic colors to Liszt’s works. In Ravel’s Menuet antique, an early piece from the composer’s studies at the Paris Conservatory that references the music of the old masters, the pianist captivated the audience with his sensitivity to dynamic and stylistic distinctions—alternating and complementing the classical form with impressions, subtly shaping the melody and demonstrating extraordinary touch, with delicate pressure contrasting with strong accents. His touch was also impressive in the following Ravel Sonatine, where listeners felt as if his fingers were sinking into the keyboard. Additionally, Cho showcased himself as an excellent architect of arching phrases, employing rubato, subtle dynamics, and colors. Even from seemingly trivial themes, he created auditory interest; his playing was technically flawless and precise, with not a single blurred note, and his speed was astonishing.

However, this was merely an appetizer for the highlight of the first half—Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit. The fantastical visions of the French poet Aloysius Bertrand were transformed by Ravel into dreamlike, ghostly, and oppressive scenes, which are exceptionally demanding both technically and expressively for the performer.

Seong-Jin Cho did not allow the audience to momentarily escape the awe that enveloped them from the very first measures. Ondine, calling the pianist to constantly navigate between raindrops running down the window and the image of a water nymph, emerged delicately and dreamily, straddling the boundary between a phantom and an aquatic world governed by different physical laws. Breathless, the audience listened to the balanced thirty-second notes, approaching a machine-like precision, subtle pianissimos that suddenly gained intensity, dynamic gradation in the chords, the melodic line in the left hand, and gentle glissandos across both white and black keys. The dreamlike quality of Ondine sharply contrasted with the following Le Gibet, which began ominously. Here, the pianist evocatively built tension, literally immersing himself in the keys as if he were creating Ravel’s piece right then and there. The barely perceptible pianissimo, pedal use, the monotony of the repeated note, tension, and drama were unparalleled. In Scarbo, the fireworks of touch, dynamics, and tempo cascaded over one another; it was a thrilling experience to witness the overall construction as well as attention to detail, such as the repeated notes, rapid shifts from pianissimo to fortissimo and back, tremolos, dazzling runs, chilling low tones, and precisely weighted final chords, each carrying its own unique significance.

The years of Franz Liszt's travels are a touchstone for any pianist who dares to take them on. For the second half of the evening, Seong-Jin Cho selected Year Two: Italy, S. 161 from Liszt's cycle. It must be noted that his tectonic abilities, combined with a keen sense for detail, an incredible palette of colors, and a portrayal of both fragility and strength, along with thoughtfulness and emotional engagement, made the second part of Liszt's cycle a remarkable interpretative achievement. The internal coherence of his interpretation and the uniqueness of each section contributed to the overall structure and the expressive arc from the beginning to the final part.

In Enthronement, the fragility of Ravel's music lingered (an impressionistic undertone seemed to accompany Cho's entire Liszt performance), as the pianist tenderly caressed the beauty of the slow theme, resulting in a very intimate expression. This was underscored by fateful chords through which the Korean artist gradually built tension. Each chord sounded different, showcasing the pianist's ability for a wide expressive range. The entire performance unfolded in a dreamy haze, chilling even from a brief passage in the lower r.egister of the keyboard.

In a contrast of playfulness and majesty, Song, Petrarch's Sonnet No. 47, was played by Cho with lyrical richness and interpretative variety. Thoughtfully, poetically, softly, and transparently, with a beautiful final spread chord, Petrarch's Sonnet No. 104 resonated deeply, while Sonnet No. 123 captivated with each note, its delicacy and fragility having an extraordinarily strong effect on the audience. The final section, After Reading Dante, introduced almost ostentatious virtuosity, extreme tempos, dynamic contrasts, explosive chords, and delicate, transparent tones. Seong-Jin Cho handled all of this superbly; his Liszt performance was admirable and dazzling, earning him a well-deserved standing ovation.

In the spirit of impressionistic-romantic haze, the encore—Schumann's Dreaming—filled the Dvořák Hall with its tenderness.
