여기 1975년 11월에 발매된 밥 딜런의 곡 ‘Hurricane’ 싱글이 있다

근데 웬 권투선수의 사진이 싱글 자켓을 대문짝만하게 장식하고 있음




70년대 밥 딜런의 걸작으로 꼽히는 앨범 ‘Desire’의 싱글컷이기도 한 이 곡은

최고의 복싱 유망주였다가 한순간에 누명을 쓰고 1966년부터 1985년까지 근 20년간 옥살이를 했던 루빈 카터(1937~2014)의 일련의 억울한 사건을 다룬다

‘허리케인’이란 당시 주먹을 폭풍처럼 몰아쳤다던 루빈 카터의 별명이었다고.




1963년 미들/웰터급을 모두 석권한 전적이 있던 당시 챔피언을 1라운드에서 떡실신시키며 역사를 새로 쓰기도 했던 루빈은 1966년에 한 사건으로 너무 어이없게 커리어에 종지부를 찍고 마는데

So they took him to the infirmary

All of Rubin's cards were marked in advance
루빈이 가지고 있던 카드는 사전에 모두 꿰뚫어져 있었고


The trial was a pig-circus, he never had a chance.
재판은 돼지우리였으며 그에게 기회라곤 없었지


The judge made Rubin's witnesses drunkards from the slums
판사가 루빈 측 증인으로 슬럼가 주정뱅이들을 내세워버렸거든


To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum
이를 지켜본 백인들에겐 루빈은 혁명을 꿈꾸는 부랑자 따위로 보였고


And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger.
또 이를 지켜본 흑인들에겐 그는 그냥 미친 니거였네


No one doubted that he pulled the trigger.
그 누구도 그가 쐈다는 걸 의심하지 않았고


And though they could not produce the gun,

The D.A. said he was the one who did the deed
지방검사는 그가 바로 범인이라고 했고


And the all-white jury agreed.

Rubin Carter was falsely tried.
루빈은 부당한 재판을 받았고


The crime was murder 'one,' guess who testified?
1급 살인죄를 썼는데, 누가 증명을 했을까?


Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied
벨로와 브래들리 그 둘이가 노골적인 거짓말을 했고


And the newspapers, they all went along for the ride.
신문들, 걔네도 다 거기 흐름에 합류했다네

증인들이 공모를 해가지고 억울하게 투옥되어 현재까지도 인종차별의 대표적인 사건으로 언급된다

잃어버린 20년이라는 시간은 어떠한 방법으로도 보상이 되지 않을 것이기에 영원히 전해내려올 이야기가 되었다

당사자 루빈 카터는 밥 딜런이 위 곡을 발표한지도 10여년이 지난 1985년에 석방 및 1988년에 무죄 판결을 받아냈고, 2014년 세상을 뜨기 전까지 캐나다에서 부당한 판결을 받은 사람을 돕는 비영리재단을 만들어 활동했다고 함





우리나라에도 이렇게 누명을 쓰고 억울하게 20년동안 옥살이를 한 윤성여같은 사람이 있다

무슨 이유가 발단으로 작용하든 더 이상 이런 어처구니없는 일들이 다시 일어나지 않았으면 하는 바람이다
