I am a viewer of SNL Korea and currently reside in South Korea.

SNL Korea produces content that is misogynistic, fostering a social environment where women are easily mocked and demeaned. I respectfully request that SNL Korea be prohibited from using the name “SNL.”

Comedy holds value when it targets the powerful, but when it is directed at the vulnerable, it becomes mere ridicule.

Recently, a Korean author, Han Kang, became the first Asian woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, garnering widespread attention.

She declined interviews to focus on her writing, as she is against war. However, today, SNL Korea uploaded a video mocking Han Kang. They imitated her characteristic expressions and ridiculed her use of adjectives and metaphors in speech.

Their behavior brings to mind the antagonist in the early part of Han Kang’s novel The Vegetarian. In the book, there’s a brief scene where couples from the husband’s workplace mock and ostracize those who live according to their principles.

Han Kang won the Nobel Prize for writing that criticizes the very type of behavior SNL Korea is displaying. Yet they are engaging in the same conduct she condemned 17 years ago

This is not an isolated incident. SNL Korea previously uploaded a series of videos mocking young women who are just beginning their careers. These videos led to many female employees being ridiculed by their bosses and colleagues.

Online, men who watched these videos argue that this is why women should not be allowed to work.

The U.S. SNL uses humor to cleverly satirize the powerful and expose societal issues. However, SNL Korea creates societal issues by ridiculing the vulnerable.

Please help put an end to their mockery of the marginalized.
