The Sony WF-1000XM6 have a warm sound profile that adds an extra dose of bass to an otherwise quite balanced response. The sound profile is very similar to that of its predecessor, the Sony WF-1000XM5, though there's less emphasis on the mid and high-bass. There are a few EQ presets you can choose from, in addition to the graphic EQ and 'Find Your Equalizer' feature in the companion app, the latter of which generates a personalized EQ based on your listening preferences. You can also see how the sound changes when you max out the bass sliders.

As with other noise cancelling headphones, there's a difference in the sound when ANC is disabled, with a touch less bass.

The noise isolation performance is outstanding in our full range test: a culmination of the passive isolation provided by these buds' memory foam tips and Sony's QN3e noise cancelling chip. There are marked improvements in bass-range attenuation compared to the previous generation, particularly, though the newer generation attenuates better in the mid and treble ranges as well. As a result, they do a fantastic job of tamping down on everything from rumbling plane engines to the neighbor's television on full blast next door. 


As with the previous generation, you can toggle between noise cancelling and ambient sound modes, the latter of which lets you dial in the amount of ambient noise you'd like to filter in (on a scale of 1-20). There's also Adaptive Sound Control (ASC) mode, which uses Sony's adaptive technology to shift between noise cancelling and ambient sound depending on the volume of your environment.
