Summary of and response to “[Measuring Readiness and Success at a Higher Education Institution]”
Lemmens, Juan-Claude, Gerhard I. du Plessis, and David J.F. Maree. “Measuring Readiness and Success at a Higher Education Institution” Journal of Psychology in Africa 21.4 (2011): 615-622. Academic Search Complete. Web. 28 September 2014.
The scholarship of Juan-Claude et al. examines the “characteristics that predict… academic success” (616) in relation to racial groups composing of black and white students. Juan-Claude et al. fears that the “inconsistencies across provinces” in Africa will divid[e the] learning experiences among racial groups in high school” due to “favourit[ing] well-resourced schools” thus affecting higher education. Juan-Claude et al. hypothesize that this will “limit[] the possibility [of] delivering on the high demand for financial service professionals needed in the market place” (615). To avoid the situation, Juan-Clade et al. proposes that “[a] broader definition of preparedness or readiness is…necessary to screen students at risk” (616). Juan-Claude et al. tests the claim by distributing “a 66 item Likert” (617) questionnaire to “two different racial groups…in the first academic year in a large business sciences faulty” to evaluate the “the readiness characteristics consist[ing] of cognitive, demographic and psycho-social variables” (616). Statistical evidence is compiled and Juan-Claude et al.’s study revealed that “high school achievements… is the single best predictor of academic success” with a surprising result of “black students… preforming academically better [than] their white counterparts at first-year level” despite many being “entrenched in an impoverished environment” and “poorer resourced school”. Juan-Claude et al.’s data also depicts “[g]oal orientation ha[ving] a positive linear relationship with academic success” showing that “students with higher goal orientation scores are more successful academically” although this data applies to white students predominately. Lastly Juan-Claude et al. observed that “parental education… produced significant relationships” for both white and black students; white students do academically well regardless of whether their parents attended university or not whereas black students receive “additional motivational support” from their “parents’ familiarity with the university environment” (620) therefore allowing them to outperform their parents.
Juan-Claude et al. concluded “that academic and non-academic variables predict academic success… [un]equally for different racial groups” (620). While the article focuses on black and white students due to them being the majority that comprise the faculty, I wonder how the variables that “predict academic success” (620) can be applied to the University of British Columbia (UBC) in which the students is composed of many racial identities. Non-academic variables such as financial stability might not be a good predictor for academic success at UBC because there is no one who appears to be in poverty. If money is an issue, the government of Canada will provide support to domestic students while international students is usually financially well off in order to travel abroad to study therefore everyone studying at UBC should not have to face financial issues. Everyone can then be able to compete academically on even grounds and all achieve success. Black students at UBC may also never have to face the racial stereotypes mentioned in the article so it is an inadequate predictor of academic success. By accepting a diverse amount of students from all across the world, UBC has attained a multicultural community therefore black students as well as others can study without any negative consequences or be looked down upon. With their identities no longer under attack, they can now focus on school like everyone else and have successes be predicted like everyone else. Academically however, high school marks may be a strong variable that predicts academic success at UBC. Only students with high averages in high school is admitted into UBC which shows how serious the marks is valued in predicting academic success. The marks obtain in high school correlates to the work in university. An example would be the math learned in high school is integrated into university therefore the marks obtained in high school math is a good predictor of future math successes or failures. Goal orientation is a strong predictor as well at UBC. The student profile which is required to be filled out during the admission process is used to evaluate a student’s potential to succeed. Those with a clearer goal is able to complete the profile more attractively due to meeting the profile question’s specification which will in turn influence the admission office’s decision. The number of credits registered by students may also be a predictor of academic success. Although UBC allows for people to take more than the required credits than needed for their degree, there is still a cap on the maximum. That is probably there because UBC predicts that students will have a high chance of failure if exceeding the credit limit. The act of imposing a credit limit displays UBC’s belief of credit number being a predictor of academic success. Parental education might be a strong predictor of success in higher education. With UBC being a very student independent place, parental advices will be an immense help as it provides students with idea on how to handle classes. Parents who have experience with university is able to be more accommodating to the student’s needs like allowing them to stay up later to finish homework instead of forcing students to sleep early, not knowing that a late assignment may be costly. Also parents who possess higher education schooling will know of the temptation of procrastination and can motivate students complete their homework early.
