Melina's connection to Odin, stuff about Norse mythology and some ethymology : Eldenring (reddit.com)





So, we have our first proper look at Melina, who is presumed to take the role of a Fire Keeper in this game. Others have already pointed out numerous times how her hair color (pink/between red and white) has probably something to do with the connection between hair colors and different races/divine families. She could have parentage from two families, she might have had red hair that is slowly fading to white. Other important things are her tattoo/seal on her left eye, her right eye that has a golden color (meaning that she still has the blessing and grace granted by the Erdtree), scars on her hands (saw this pointed out by u/bleuburd here on Reddit) and how she seems to appear out of nowhere with this ethereal blue effect surrounding her.

Her name is also fairly similar to other female goddessess/important figures we know about; she could be the daughter or sister of Queen Marika, or maybe even Marika herself in a disguise. I personally suggest this video by Ziostorm ( u/TheZiostorm ) that sums up some observations and early speculations around her.

However, I'd like to focus on her rather obvious connection to Norse mythology – Odin, specifically – and how this may inform us about her role.

To keep it short: Odin, king of the gods in Norse mythology, seeked knowledge, and travelled to Mimir's well to find it. Mimir was a being who lived under the World Tree, Yggdrasil. The source of the well's wisdom was the deep waters that flow from under the roots of Yggdrasil. To be granted permission to drink from the well, Odin was asked by Mimir to sacrifice his eyes and drop them into the well. Odin took out one of his eyes, which granted him permission to drink and gain unfathomable wisdom. Moreover, Odin discovered runes runes by hanging himself on the branches of Yggdrasil.

Odin saw in a vision that he would die in the battle of Ragnarök, eaten alive by the wolf Fenrir. Odin starts to gather as many warriors as he can to fight by his side. These are the Einherjar who, after being killed in battle, are brought to Valhalla by the Valkyries to feast and prepare for Ragnarök. Odin was also known to appear in a disguise, most notably as an old man wearing a cloak.

Now, knowing that Elden Ring is clearly inspired by Norse mythology, it's fairly easy to connect these points to Melina. She also most likely has a divine origin because of her hair color and name, and appears to the Tarnished to aid them in their fight against the gods to become an Elden Lord. She is missing an eye, or perhaps this eye is sealed off by the tattoo or mark on her face. A lot of people have already speculated that this mark could be a claw or a talon (that belongs to a bird of prey or a dragon). This might make sense, since dragons are connected to the Erdtree/Elden Ring (a dragon being a "trueborn heir", as Godrik states in the new gameplay review). I also suggest that the tattoo might resemble the branches and/or roots of the Erdtree itself as seen in this artwork on the Premium Collector's Edition box, which would further solidify her connection to the Erdtree. You could also speculate the Melina herself might be a force behind the creation of the Elden Ring, which has been broken into Great Runes. Perhaps these Great Runes were first created to be later combined into the Elden Ring?

It's also a common misconception that Odin was simply an altruistic and nice old man. This is not always true: one of his main reasons of collecting the souls of the Einherjar was to fight fate and save himself from his own death that he had seen in a vision. Could Melina also have some rather selfish motives that she hides from the player?

Finally, I'd like to bring up Melina and other female characters who have similar names and where their names come from.

Melina comes from the Greek word méli, which means "honey". The name is associated with the nymph Melissa, who nursed Zeus with honey when he was a baby. This could describe her connection to the protagonist, as she is possibly aiding a future Elden Lord in their quest, or it could imply that she has a deep connection to another important godly being. You could also say that the golden grace has a honey-like color. Einherjar feast on mead in Valhalla, and mead is made from honey.

Marika comes ultimately from the name Mary, which has an uncertain origin, but might come from a word meaning "beloved".
