Hedley and Ines are Sarkaz mercenaries who took part in the Kazdel civil war. The story starts with Hedley reporting to Inez that one of their mercenaries, "W", was dead, but a Sarkaz girl took his weapons and gears and followed Hedley all the way back. They let the girl join their mercenary group, giving her the name "W" after their deceased partner-in-arms. This is the W we all know.
A few months after, W has become infamous as a ruthless, deadly freshman among mercenaries. One of their scouts was intercepted by "Babel" and offered a mission: to protect their cargo which was on the way from Rim Billiton. Although voicing her distrust for W, Ines still accepted Hedley's advice to take on the task with W on her team.
After they made their way to the destination point, Ines makes a campfire while waiting for Hedley's team to reach their rendezvous point, and did some "mild exchanges" with W. It is revealed that Ines is not a Sarkaz, and she grated her horns (think it was originally a sheep's horns) into a Sarkaz horn's shape to blend in. Also, Ines's Arts allows her to peek into other people's minds and judge their conditions through their shadows with her sight. Hedley arrives with his team and while they were revising their mission, Hedley warns Ines not to peek at the cargo with her Arts, but she did it anyways, and she found out that the cargo was a skeleton (this fits previous observations that the Rhodes Island base is a sperm whale skeleton).
The scene switches to a battlefield. Ines and W are injured by an enemy ambush. With Ines and W being surrounded, Theresa steps in and interferes, saving Ines and W.
W wakes up on "Babel" (might be our current base, and according to Ines, "a ship") with Ines. Apparently, they were brought here to be taken care of by Babel while Hedley was having a meeting with Kal'tsit, Doctor and Theresa, who he refers to as Your Highness. Later, W wanders around, and stumbles across a young Amiya, then Theresa with Closure. W engages into a dialogue with a respectful tone (much unlike her chaotic personality) with Theresa, also referring to her as Your Highness. It is revealed that Theresa is a Kazdel royalty on equal terms with the reigning prince regent, and has united over half of Kazdel's noble families. Within the dialogue, Theresa mentions that the ship's name is called "Rhodes Island", which she found in old data existing in the ship. W recalls that she didn't even look into Theresa's eyes throughout the whole dialogue, but she had a sad aura underneath her seemingly naive appearance. W also says that she felt fear when encountering the Doctor.
Hedley decided that he and Ines will leave Babel after some time. Hedley refers to Kal'tsit as Lord Kal'tsit, and talked about Theresa remembering his background. Hedley reminisces with Ines about their now destroyed mercenary flag on their departure, which dozens of their fellow-in-arms had died to keep it standing in battles. W decided to stay with Babel. When Ines was asked about the people on Babel by Hedley, she says that Theresa was filled with sadness, yet she was a magnificent, gentle figure; Kal'tsit was robotic, but surprisingly full of human emotions; as for the Doctor, she made a metaphor: it was as if the Doctor is a chess player, and they were the chess pieces. Chess players don't care about the pieces, they only care about playing against a player who is as strong as them. Hedley agrees with Ines's observations on the Doctor. The scene cuts to W talking to Scout, trying to figure out where Theresa is to take pictures of her (fangirling, so sweeeeet).
Months after their departure from Babel, Hedley and Ines were still active mercenaries. It seems like a major shift in the battle landscape occurred, so Hedley and Ines decides to find W. The scene changes to W fighting a Sarkaz warrior. It was revealed that the Sarkaz warrior is a subordinate of the Kazdel prince regent. Their forces attacked Babel, Theresa was dead, and the Doctor went missing. This drove W on a killing spree of revenge, hunting down those who took part in the operation alone. After some dialogues, the Sarkaz warrior showed remorse in killing Theresa, which ended in W killing him "as an executioner he was waiting for".
Hedley and Ines finds her at that moment. Hedley then says that the prince regent, having returned to power, united all armed forces in Kazdel under his banner. Hedley continued that they will be migrating to Ursus, to join a new force, Reunion, as the prince regent wants his force to infiltrate into other forces than just Kazdel alone. Although she hates the prince regent Theresis, W, judging that she cannot stay in Kazdel much longer anyways, accepted Hedley's offer to join them again, but with her as their leader (excluding the forces the prince regent will send).
On their way to Ursus, Ines has a talk with Hedley on W. Hedley comments that W is acting way too calm, much unlike her almost maniac characteristic. As a Catastrophe is coming, Ines goes out to find W, only to find her right on the track of the Catastrophe Cloud because it's fun. Ines then bursts out, "She ain't no fucking Catastrohpe Cloud, she IS the Catastrophe", which Hedley thought "Profanity..." quietly in his mind as a response. The scene ends with Talulah welcoming them into Reunion.
The timeline cuts forward to Evil Times, where we were in Chernobog. The scene starts with a Sarkaz mercenary leader, Galson, who is now under Reunion, having a conversation with the player. He recognises the player and sighs as he reveals that Rhodes Island's information is being shared among the Reunion and Rhodes Island will fall. Despite that, Rhodes Island seem to have went past W's defense line almost unscathed, which he predicted was going to happen. It was revealed that the player was Scout. The two, after talking about Theresa and Scout mentioning some of them once fought together, parted ways.
Ines is chasing Scout. Ines tells Scout that all 12 members in his squad have sacrificed themselves. When asked why did she know their names, she said W told her to look out for the name tags on them. W sent her because she didn't want to kill Scout herself. Ines also mentions the surviving Rhodes Island soldier in Operational Intelligence, who was in Patriot's grounds (so while Ines and Scout were chatting, Hellagur and Patriot were chatting too). Scout then finds an oppurtunity to flee, and Ines chases after him. He led her to the center of Chernobog and gives her an advice, "For you, Hedley and W, I have an advice: do not die in vain before you see the truth with your own eyes.". Ines, who was using her Arts, sees Talulah in the distance (note: here Talulah is labelled as Talulah(?), very indicating) and panics when Talulah notices her. Scout tried to flee again, but is attacked by Hedley and died, telling them to leave this place with his last breath. When Hedley asks Ines why did she hesitate, she hurriedly tells Hedley they needed to bail immediately and go to W.
The next cutscene starts with the sentence "Talulah has changed.". Ines continues on that when she first met Talulah, she gave off an aura like Theresa. Theresa was filled with sadness and secrets of the land, while Talulah was filled with calm, passionate rage. Reunion turned from a revolution fueled with that powerful rage into a war filled with manipulation and conspiracies. Ines, while running away with Hedley, says that Talulah transformed from a rebel into something else, which reminds her a lot of the Doctor, and is slowly but surely destroying Reunion itself. Unlike the Doctor, who might always have been that way, Talulah just suddenly transformed into who she is now one day. Ines revealed that she saw Talulah with two shadows with her Arts, like an ancient, powerful relic, and heavily emphasizes to Hedley that W must know this. She splits off with Hedley to rush to W's side to tell her about her discovery.
On her way to W, Ines was intercepted by a Reunion Infected, who is sent by Talulah to kill her. The scene cuts to a Reunion Infected reporting to a Caster that Ines is dead, and wants the Caster to die after bombarding the area to make it look real. The Caster agrees and wants the Reunion soldier to take care of his family who were still in the city.
W has a flashback about the day where she, Ines and Hedley first arrived at Reunion, with Patriot coming to them, wanting to hear about what happened in Kazdel. W then snaps back to reality and a Reunion soldier under Talulah comes to question her on her mistakes, including possibly letting go of Rhodes Island, and reports Ines's "unfortunate sacrifice". Hedley surpresses W's anger after she figures out what actually happened, and W shoos the soldier off. Hedley talks with W, and mentions Flamebringer who ran away from their team in their dialogue (yes, Operational Intelligence again, gosh they are really linking together the pieces).
Hedley then mentions Ines's concerns about Talulah, and says that the Theresis's messenger will be departing soon, meaning that he will eventually get hold on the news and interfere with things here. Hedley also asks about Rhodes Island, since people reported seeing Scout and "that ghost from Babel" (should be refering to the Doctor) which W confronted and let go of. Hedley also says that he will be leaving with the messenger to Victoria, which leads to W chiding him to be wanting to commit suicide over Ines by going back to Londonium. W gives Hedley the option to flee Kazdel through Ursus and Lungmen and she will turn a blind eye, but Hedley refuses due to deeper reasons. Upon being asked if he has a plan, Hedley replies with "Go ask Ines", which W took as a bad joke. Hedley continues by saying another joke, "Ines said that you looked more and more like a maniac, but your personality and tactics became more and more indesicive" before he leaves the confused W. (He then proceeds to kill some involved Reunion soldiers before departure to Victoria.)
A Confessor (that looks strikingly like Shining, but with a goat skull mask on and appears to be male) converses with Hedley on his doings at Reunion. The Confessor knows that "that unnerving figure" is back at Rhodes Island, which surprises Hedley. Theresis seem to have more plans regarding Reunion and creating more chaos. The Confessor then tells Hedley they should stay here and rest, which was basically telling them they're under house arrest indefinitely.
Hedley proceeds to have a conversation with a Sarkaz messenger. They talk about how hard it is to do anything under Theresis's nose, but they have laid down several ways to do it, including a disguised signal post in Kazdel. Hedley can't do it himself, so it should be up to the messenger, who expresses that this identity as a messenger sure is handy. "'Continue to do what Talulah says, Hedley will not be back temporarily', that should be good enough." "...Hmph, don't tell me what to do."
The story ends with W in the slums encountering two children, one of them barely able to hold up an abandoned Sarkaz's sword to fend her off. W compliments the children for their spirit. "Then...... Do you know what it means to take over a Sarkaz's sword?"
