ERC: When he first came in, I think he was ready to just get in the booth and sing, but we asked him to sit on the couch first, and he kind of looked around like “What’s going on? I’m ready to sing.” So we talked through Jun Dark (a C-JeS executive) to him: "We want to go over the English lyrics with you." And he made this face like, “Oh no….” He kind of looked at the paper and did that little shy thing he does, where he covers his face and starts laughing. [laughs] He started reading the lyrics line by line and looked up once a while and kept giggling. He was so embarrassed, and we kept telling him, “No you’re doing good!” He already sounded really good, but there are some English vowels and consonants that don't exist in Korean, so we worked hard to work on those things with instructions like “Put your tongue here when you say this” or “Open your mouth like this to make this sound.”

ERC: 준수가 처음 들어왔을 때, 내 생각에 그는 당장 부스에 들어가서 노래를 할 준비가 되어있었던 것 같다. 그런데 우리가 먼저 의자에 앉으라고 했을 때 그는 "무슨 일이지? 난 노래할 준비가 되어있는데."라는 식으로 주위를 둘러봤다. 그래서 우리는 Jun Dark(C-JeS 간부)를 통해 준수에게 말했다: "당신과 함께 영어 가사를 검토해보고 싶어요." 그 때 준수는 "Oh no...."하는 표정을 지어보였다. 종이를 보더니 그가 쑥스러울 때 하는, 얼굴을 가리고 웃는 특유의 몸짓을 했다. (웃음) 그는 천천히 한 줄 한 줄 가사를 읽기 시작했고 가끔씩 우리를 올려다보며 계속 웃었다. 준수는 엄청 부끄러워했지만 우리는 계속 "아냐, 잘하고 있어!"라고 말해주었다. 이미 발음은 괜찮았는데 한국어에는 없는 영어 모음이나 자음들이 있어서 "이걸 발음할 때는 혀를 여기다 대"라던지 "이 소리를 낼 때는 입을 이렇게 벌려"와 같은 설명과 함께 그 부분들에 대해 노력했다.

 

A: We started working on all kinds of pronunciations and sounds. It was funny just watching him make some of the faces that he made and move his mouth in all kinds of ways to get the right pronunciation. We all just kept laughing about how certain things sounded in English. June Dark had translated the song in Korean for him, so he understood the meaning of the song and the emotional content it would take to sell the story. As we worked more and more in the studio, it seemed as if he got to a place and really got the feeling of the song right. So we got him into the booth, and he basically just closed his eyes and started recording.

+++A: 우리는 온갖 발음과 소리들을 연습하기 시작했다. 맞는 발음을 내기 위해 온갖 방법으로 입을 움직이고 표정을 짓는 준수를 보는 것만도 재밌었다. 어떤 단어들이 영어로 어떻게 발음되는지 들으면서 우리는 계속 웃었다. Jun Dark가 가사를 한국어로 번역해주어서 준수는 노래의 의미와 스토리를 전달하기 위해 가져야 할 감정선을 이해했다. 스튜디오에서 점점 작업을 진행해 나갈수록, 준수는 어떤 지점에 도달하여 노래의 감정선을 완전히 이해한 것처럼 보였다. 그래서 우리는 준수를 부스로 들여보냈고, 그는 단순히 눈을 감고 녹음을 하기 시작했다.+
 
 

+++++ERC: +He was practicing before we started recording, and he would sing it right into the mic, but he would keep singing one line, then look at me, sing another, and look at me again. He kept looking at me for reassurance. [laughs] Sometimes when he had a tough time, I’d sing it to him, and he’d sing it back. He just kept looking at me to make sure he got it right, so I’d give him a thumbs up. Even though I didn’t know any Korean, and he knew a little English, we developed a good method of communication through looks and thumbs ups. [laughs]

+ERC: 준수는 녹음을 시작하기 전에 계속 연습을 하고 있었고 마이크에 대고 노래를 바로 부르기 시작했는데, 계속 한 줄 부르고 나를 보고, 한 줄 부르고 또 나를 보고 했다. 계속 확신을 얻기 위해 나를 봤다. (웃음) 그래서 가끔 준수가 어려움을 겪을 때는 내가 노래를 불러주고, 그럼 준수가 되받아 노래를 부르는 식이었다. 계속 자기가 맞게 불렀다는 것을 확인하기 위해 나를 봐서 나는 엄지를 치켜세워줬다. 비록 나는 한국어를 전혀 몰랐고 준수는 영어를 조금밖에 할 줄 몰랐지만 우리는 시선과 엄지를 들어주는 제스쳐를 통한 좋은 의사소통의 방법을 알아냈다. (웃음)+



A: It was so easy for him, and after we ran through the song, it was just fantastic. I walked into the studio with him; we just sang back and forth and experimented a little bit with some of the adlibs you hear in the song. He j+ust closed his eyes and took it to another place. It was incredible; it was like we were doing an American Idol battle or something. [laughs] Every time I sang a note, he would out-sing what I was doing, and I was amazed, just blown away by the amount of talent he has.

A: 준수한테는 너무 쉬웠다. 노래를 한 번 다 끝내고 나자 환상적이었다. 나는 준수와 함께 스튜디오에 걸어들어가서 노래를 주고 받으며 현재 발매된 노래에서 들을 수 있는 애드립들을 조금씩 시도해봤다. 준수는 그저 눈을 감고 새로운 세계로 노래를 이끌었다. 믿기 힘들었다. 나는 우리가 American Idol이라도 찍고 있는 줄 알았다. (웃음) 내가 한 음을 노래할 때마다 준수는 내가 부른 것 이상의 음을 불러냈고 나는 그가 가진 재능에 압도되어 놀라움을 금치 못했다.

 

ERC: He actually did this run [laughs] -- the run that he does in the second verse on “be.” Automatic gave him the run, and he said okay. He did it, and it was way better than when Automatic did it. [laughs] I was in the booth with him, and I was like “Heyyy!” Automatic told me that everybody in the booth was laughing.
 
+++ERC: 준수는 진짜 이렇게 했다. (웃음) -- 2절에 있는 "be"에서 말이다. Automatic이 한 번 불러주었고 준수가 오케이를 했다. 그리고는 준수가 불렀는데 Automatic이 했던 것 보다 훨씬 나았다. (웃음) 부스에 그와 함께 있었는데 내가 "Heyyy!"하고 소리쳤다. Automatic이 나중에 이야기해주길, 그 때 부스에 있던 사람들이 다 웃었다더라.+



"Uncommitted” is a soulful ballad song, you know? So when Junsu would do these little runs that were just so soulful, Automatic once said, “Man, we’re making you black!” or “You’re turning black!” He understood that and said, “No, I’m not black. I am yellow.” [laughs] We just couldn’t help but crack up.

"Uncommitted"는 소울풀한 발라드 노래다. 그래서 준수가 이것저것 굉장히 소울풀한 시도들을 했을 때 Automatic이 "이것 봐, 우리가 너를 흑인으로 만들고 있어!"나 "너 점점 흑인이 되고 있어!"라고 했다. 준수가 그걸 알아듣더니 "아뇨, 저는 흑인이 아니에요. 전 황인이에요."라고 했다. (웃음) 우리는 진짜 웃을 수 밖에 없었다.
 
It was very fun working with him, especially when he did runs and scales that we didn’t expect from him. It was exciting that he could execute the song with so much soul and style. He works really hard and it’s obvious I think ‘cause it pays off.
 
준수와 일하는 것은 굉장히 즐거웠는데, 특히 우리가 상상하지도 못했던 시도들과 스케일을 보여줬을 때 그랬다. 그가 엄청난 소울과 스타일로 노래를 할 수 있다는 사실이 흥미진진했다. 그는 정말 열심히 하고 그만큼의 결과를 얻는다.



A: He has a natural gift. I’m looking forward to working with him in the future. I’m looking at the relationship I’m developing with him as a Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson one. I hope this is the kind of relationship we’re going to have, and that we’ll continue working together. I think what we’ve done together is just the beginning, and I think we’re going to do some incredible things, just blow people’s minds!

APA: Did you think the music video represented your song well?

+A: It’s the best feeling in the world seeing an artist as great as him singing a song you made from the heart. “Tarantallegra” is a great video for performance, but “Uncommitted” really showcases Junsu as a person, as a singer -- and seeing himself evolve into a man. So I think that when people see the video, they’ll see him like they’ve never seen him before. I love the video, and I think it’s a really great platform for the song.

A: 내가 진심을 담아 만든 노래를 준수처럼 멋진 가수가 불러주는 것을 보는 것은 세상에서 제일 기분이 좋은 일이다. "Tarantallegra"는 퍼포먼스를 위한 좋은 비디오지만 "Uncommitted"는 준수의 인간적인 면, 가수로써의 면, 그리고 그 자신이 남자로 성장해나가는 것을 잘 보여준다. 그래서 사람들이 비디오를 볼 때 그들은 이전까지 봐 왔던 것과 전혀 다른 모습의 준수를 보게 될 것이다. 뮤직비디오는 정말 마음에 들고, 노래를 위한 좋은 플랫폼(발판)이라고 생각한다.
 
 
 

+++APA: +After working with Junsu, how would you compare it to working with American artists?
APA: 준수와 일한 뒤에, 그를 다른 미국 가수들과 비교한다면?

 
A: The reason why I compare Junsu to Michael Jackson so often is that he grew up in music. He’s been doing this for a long time, so he has this natural artistry and this professionalism that’s in his soul that you don’t see from artists who’ve been in the industry just for a couple of years. It is a different level of experience. You really are getting to see the best of the best when you are working with Junsu.

A: 내가 준수를 Michael Jackson과 이렇게 자주 비교하는 이유는 그가 음악 속에서 자라났기 때문이다. 준수는 이 일을 오랫동안 해왔기 때문에, 가요계에 고작 몇 년 있었던 가수들에게서는 볼 수 없는 타고난 예술가적 면모와 프로의식이 영혼에 들어있다. 그건 차원이 다른 경험이다. 준수와 일하게 될 때는 정말 최고 중의 최고의 것을 보게 될 것이다.
 

+When you say the difference between him and American artists: I don't think there’s a difference in culture, but professionalism. I hope America accepts him; that would be fantastic. I think he is going to be a challenge, and he is going to be an artist that people look at and say he’s the in the highest of echelons.+

준수와 미국 가수들의 차이점에 대해 말해보자면: 문화적인 부분에서 다른 것은 없는 것 같지만 프로의식이 다르다고 생각한다. 미국이 준수를 받아들였으면 좋겠다. 그렇게 된다면 정말 환상적일거다. 내 생각에 준수는 하나의 도전(미국의 다른 가수들이 도전의 대상으로 삼는다는 뜻인 듯)이 될거고 사람들이 보면 가장 높은 계층에 있는 아티스트라고 말하게 될 것이다.
