In the search for certainty, it is natural to begin with our present experiences, and in some sense, no doubt, knowledge is to be derived from them. But any statement as to what it is that our immediate experiences make us know is very likely to be wrong.

Nothing makes us more realize actually than the current political status of Korea the fact that establishing democracy is one thing, preserving and developing it is(are?) another. As we well know, there has been struggles and sacrifices of numerous people in the course of setting our democracy up.
확실성에 대한 탐구에 있어서, 지금 우리의 경험들을 먼저 생각해 보게 되는 것은 당연한 일이다. 어떻게 생각해보면, 지식이라는 것도 경험으로부터 얻어야 한다는 사실에 대해선 의심의 여지가 없다. 허나, 우리가 직접적인 경험을 통해 알게되는 것이 무엇이냐에 관한 명제들은 틀릴 가능성이 매우 높다. / When it comes to the difference between establishing democracy and making it preserved as well as expanded, nothing makes us feel more actually than the present condition of Korea.
As we know, there were struggles and sacrifices of many Koreans in order to establish democracy.
correction : Nothing makes us more realize actually ==> Nothing makes us realize more actually
확실성의 추구에 있어 우리 현재의 경험이라는 바탕에서 출발하는 것이 통상적이며, 일면 (一面), 지식이 경험에서 추출되어야 함은 의심의 여지가 없다. 그러나 우리의 직접적 경험만이 우리들에게 가르침을 준다는 논거에 관한 어떠한 진술도 사실이 아닐 가능성이 농후하다.
Never before have we so vividly experienced the marked contrast in understanding between the establishment of democratic rule and the development of its value as we do nowadays in Korea. As you may well know, the attainment of democracy required struggles and sacrifices offered by many people.
Ha, ha! You seem worried about which one to take, “is” or “are”. It could go either way I guess. If you are not sure in a situation like this, just omit the verb entirely. It never hurts the integrity of the sentence.
Welcome back, dear friend. Oh yes, That's a good idea. It didn't come to me at the moment omitting the verb. Thank you again. Whenever I see your answer for Korean to English translation, I can't but sigh regeting why such a good setences don't come(occur) to me. If only I were 20 years younger!
correction : setences > sentences : What a dull thumbs I have!.
I anlayzed the sentence "what it is that our immediate experiences make us know " as the join of "what is (it)? and"our immediate experiences make us know (it)" by relative pronoun 'that' . Did I guess right? One more question. As to that part "접적 경험만이 " in your translation, I can't find any word meaning 'only'. How come it is translated like that? Please give me a hint.
My translation looks like that of an elementary school boy compared with yours. It certainly is true that learning English is good. It turns me a stammering teenaged chicken as soon as I speak in English. What a paying business!
확실성의 탐구에 있어서, 우리가 현재의 경험과 어느정도의 감각에 의해 지식을 얻는 것은 의심할여지도 없이 자연스럽다고 한다. 그러나 우리의 즉각적인 경험으로 지식을 만든것들은 틀릴 여지도 있다.
we realize nothing is more solid what it is different problem between organize democracy , keep that. as you know people put many sacrifice and struggle for organize democracy
사소목숨님께 // Oh, I see. Then who will hang the bell around the neck of the cat? Do I have to do at this age?^^;;
1)There is nothing which can make people realize that establishing democracy, and preserving and developing it are different problem each, as Korean reality today do. As we know well, there were many people's struggles and sacrifices in establishing democracy.
영작2)More than anything, Korean reality today make people realize that establishing democracy, and not only preserving but also developing it are different problem each. As you know well, many people struggled and sacrificed to establish democracy.
영문 두 번째 문장에서 'as to what it is'가 꼭 필요한 부분인지 궁금합니다. 있을 때랑 없을 때랑 어떤 차이가 있는건가요. 영작에서 '-를 만드는 것과 지키고 발전시키는 것'같은 표현은 어떻게 영어로 옮길 수 있는 지 궁금합니다. '-를 만드는 것, 지키는 것, 발전시키고 물려주는 것'처럼 바뀌는 경우는 또 어떻게 해야 자연스러운 영문이 되는 지 궁금합니다.
사소목숨님께 //Oh, sorry. It was just a kidding. I mimicked one of old gags of comedian '임하룡'. Pardon me,please.
I’ve just come back to tend to the questions including yours. When the sentence you asked about is paraphrased, you may put it this way, “It is what that our immediate experiences make us know”. Strictly speaking, therefore, it is not necessary to place “it is” after "“what”. If you replace “what it is” with something like “the fact”, it gets much easier to understand as you will see in another
paraphrased one as follows. “Any statement as to THE FACT that our immediate experiences make us know is very likely to be wrong.” Here in this case, however, the writer chose to use “what” in such a way that you can’t have it stand alone. That is why the superfluous addition of “it is” had to be attached. To your second question, you have to have the whole of words or sentences in your mind
in order to get the clearer picture regarding the essence that they are trying to convey. Let me show you something that will check how you normally read and understand words, if letter by letter, or a word as a whole. “Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the
rghit pclae. The rset can be a total mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe” What do you think? Were you able to read and understand without any problem? If you were, you must be accustomed to reading words as a whole. The same goes with a sentence or paragraphs.
If you train yourself to get the whole picture out of them, you will no longer nitpick if there was such word as “only” or not.^^ I was just trying to be funny a little, but there is truth in it. You translate the meaning, not the words. Have I answered your question?
Thank you. I understood your instruction.
One thing more. “If only I were 20 years younger!” You should have said, “If only I were 20 years older!” You will never turn the course of your life to the bygone days. But think of what you can accomplish in the coming 20 years if only you put your mind on things you want to get done.
I didn't know how it can be translated like yours, 'cause I anayzed the structure of the sentence wrong. Thanks again for your effort to teach me taking troubles of mixing the spellings of words like that.
Thanks again for your advice. That 'If only~' was just a joke or something, I believe you'd know wellI. I can't omit 'thanks' whenever I read your instructions for me. About the 'accomplishments, we would have chances to talk some ofher day, I hope. I have had quite different ways of living and thinking from others.
제가 sim님께 영어로 설명을 했습니다만 다시 말씀드리지요. “Why do you want to go?” 라는 문장을 “Why is it that you want to go?”로 만드는 것에 비교할 수 있습니다. 여기서도 사실 what it is 를 what으로만 써도 되나 현재의 문장 구조상 이렇게 할 수 없는지라 불가피하게 it is 를 삽입했습니다. 필자가 what을 쓰겠다는 의지를 보였기 때문인데 사실 ‘as to what it is’ 대신에 편하게 ‘as to things’ 라 적어도 (폼이 안 나서 그렇지) 마찬가지가 됩니다.
I had no trouble in reading above paragraphs with mixed spelling. At first, I didn't recognize that the spellings were mixed up. I'll keep in mind the word 'I translate the meaning, not the words'.
That is a very promising sign. Now, you can reset your boundary beyond English. There are so many other treasures of languages waiting to be found by anyone who needs them so bad. You may be one of them.
Thank you for encouraging me so many various ways. You are one of few seniors whom I can respect heartily. I could hardly meet a man of Open-mind with generosity and love for everyone like you.
I'll willingly inform 학생님 of the message. ^^
학생님, 제가 실수를 했습니다. sim님이 사소목숨님께 출제를 부탁하는 글을 읽은 적이 있는지라 제 나름대로 추측하여 사소목님님이 문제를 내신 걸로 생각했습니다. 죄송합니다. 그리고 수고에 감사를 드립니다.
