영어의 가장 근본적인 난점은 그 철자법이다

대부분의 한국인같이 어려서부터 영어를 익힌 자에게는 언뜻 인식되지 않는 것이지만

자세히 뜯어보면 영어만큼 철자법이 혼돈 그 자체인 언어는 찾아보기 어렵다

영어를 어느정도 배웠다면 다음 시를 소리내어 읽어보자.

A Dreadful Language

I take it you already know Of tough and bough and cough and dough
Others may stumble, but not you, On hiccough, thorough, tough and through;
Well done! And how you wish perhaps To learn of less familiar traps?
Beware of heard, a dreadful word That looks like beard and sounds like bird.
And dead; it\'s said like bed, not bead For goodness sake don\'t call it \"deed\".
Watch out for meat and great and threat (They rhyme with suite and straight and debt)
A moth is not a moth in mother, Nor both in bother, broth in brother.
And here is not a match for there Nor dear and fear for bear and pear.
And then there\'s dose and rose and lose Just look them up and goose and choose,
And cork and work and word and sword, And do and go and thwart and cart.
Come, come I\'ve hardly made a start. A dreadful language? Man alive
I mastered it when I was five.

감이 오는가?

왜 dough는 \'도우\'(피자에 이용되는 그것)고 rough는 \'러프\'인지,

왜 height(높이)는 \'하이트\'이고 weight(무게)는 \'웨이트\'인지 정말로 아무런 규칙도 없다.

철자와 발음이 거의 기계적일 정도로 일관적인 중국어와는 다르게 처음 보는 단어를 어떻게 읽어야 할지

그야말로 며느리도 모르는 것이다. 독일어와 스페인어는 이와 다르게 외래어를 제외하면 거의 쓰는 대로 읽으며,

프랑스어의 철자법도 꽤나 지저분하게 되어있긴 하지만 의외로 규칙적이고 영어처럼 지맘대로 읽는 단어는 상당히 적다.

더 자세하게 알고 싶다면 영어를 거의 모르는 아동들에게 영어의 철자법을 가르치는 것을 시도해 보자.

배우는 사람보다 가르치는 사람의 머리가 더 아프다.

이렇듯 영어식 비일관적인 철자법에 익숙해진 덕에 영어가 아닌 언어임에도 불구하고

(엄연히 영어가 아닌 프랑스어, 독일어, 스페인어 등을 \'무식하게\' 영어 발음으로만 고집해서 읽는다던지)

별로 그런것에 개의치않은채 비일관적으로 읽어버리는 사소한 문제가 발생하고 있다

하나의 단어에 여러가지 엉터리 발음이 난무하면서 혼돈을 불러오고 있는 

(히우지자네이루, 리오데자네이로, 리우데자네이루, 리오데자네이루, 리우데자네이로, 리오데자네로) 비영어권 단어도 적지않다

이 문제는 영어가 아닌것에 영어의 철자법을 대입시키면서 영어 읽기와 마찬가지로 \"제대로 어떻게 읽어야 할지 몰라서\"

그냥 막 부른 결과물들이다
