For those who have visited Singapore before, I believe you would have heard of unique phrases such as “play play” or “borrow me $15 can?”.

The south-eastern Asian country is known for its use of Singlish, an interesting English-based creole that has vocabularies derived from Malay, English, Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Tamil, Punjabi, and [to a less extent,] other languages. The language 도미nates throughout Singapore as it is the common language for socializing. However, this language is difficult for foreigners to understand as it is very different from Standard English.

Some examples are:

Singlish: Borrow me $5 can? — Standard English: Can you lend me $5?

싱글리쉬: Borrow me $5 can?

Singlish: Got problem call me can. — Standard English: Please let me know if you need help.

Got problem call me can.

Singlish: You ask me I ask who. — Standard English: I don’t know either.

You ask me I ask who.

Singlish: Can or not? — Standard English: Is it possible?

싱글리쉬: Can or not?

The government believes that Singapore, as an international financial hub, should speak Standard English to improve the living standard.

Here are some examples of Singlish.
