Dash의 길이에 따라 'em dash(―)' 와 'en dash(–)'로 나뉘는데 이는 대시의 넓이를 M과 N의 넓이에 대입한 것. 

En dash가 em dash보다 더 많이 쓰인다. 


En dash와 em dash는 완벽한 문장 안에서 break를 표시하거나 삽입 어구(문장의 부가 설명을 함)를 분리할 때 쓴다. 


My young slave―didn't prepare the lunch.

When teacher entered the classroom ― knives, blood, meat everywhere ― it was sanguinary.

(이 경우에만 쓰인 en dash는 원칙적으로 띄어쓰기를 한다)


En dash는 'and'와 전치사 'to'의 용법을 갖는다.
