I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. To be in company, even with the best, is soon wearisome and dissipating. I love to be alone.I have never found a companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our chambers. A man thinking or working is always alone, let him be where he will.

 

시간 대부분 혼자 있는 것이 유익하다고 본다. 함께 있는 것은, 좋은 친구들이라고 할지언정 바로 따분해지며 소모된다. 혼자 있는 것을 즐긴다. 고독같이 다정한 친구를 본 적 없다. 우리는 대부분 실내에 있을 때보다 집밖으로 나갈 때 더 외롭다. 사람은 생각하거나 일하거나 늘 혼자다, 있을 곳에 있다고 하자.
