지리학의 몇가지 현대적 정의 지리학은 지표의 다양한 특성들에 대한 정확하고 잘정돈된 합리적인 설명을 제공하는데 관심을 둔다. 지리학은 모든 인문현상과 지표상에서 그 인문현상과 관련되는 지표 자연환경을 구성하는 방대한 상호작용 체계를 이해하고자 한다. 지리학은 자연환경의 하위 체계들이 지표에서 어떻게 조직되며 여러 다른 인간집단 및 자연환경과의 관계 속에서 인간의 흔적을 땅위에 아로새기는지를 설명하고자 한다. 지리학은 인간이 살아가는 소여물로서의 세상에 관심을 둔다. 현대도시들의 도로는 지리학에서는 패턴과 프로세스로 표현되는 공간조직에 관한 연구의 대상이 된다. 지리학은 다양한 특성이 나타나는 지표의 입지나 공간분포를 예측하고 설명하는 이론들을 개발하고 검증하는 공간과학이라고 할 수 있다.
