I've not played as a secret faith yet but I had a look at the scripts for them and if I'm reading those correctly, there seem to be few things that you can do to weigh things in your favour

    having high diplomacy helps. Breakpoints at 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22
    the target having the Trusting trait also helps

Using the special martial option first helps if the target (at least one needs to be true - multiple conditions don't have additional benefit)

    is brave
    has martial education
    has a martial lifestyle (I assume it's the traits)
    is actually a martial on a council

Using the community argument (I assume it's diplomacy) helps if the target

    has the Gregarious trait
    or has 1 friend (seems to be exactly one, not one or more)
    or has 1 lover (same)
    has diplomacy education
    has diplomacy lifestyle

    not sure how to read this one but I'm guessing it's any of their children has an opinion of you of 35

    any_child = { reverse_opinion = { who = ROOT value = 35 } }

Using the theology argument helps if the target

    is erudite
    has learning education
    has learning lifestyle

Using the stewardship argument helps if the target

    is ambitious
    is just
    has stewardship education
    has stewardship lifestyle

Things that make people more likely to reject are

    target being a priest
    target being paranoid
    target being zealous
    target being any landed character (progressively harder from baron to emperor)
    you having low diplomacy, it seems to be if you have a diplomacy of exactly 8 but I'm guessing it should be 8 or less, so perhaps it's that

Oh, and I forgot to mention here - if the target is the head of the religion, the check is explicitly set to fail, so you should never be able to convert them.
