When watching this, I kept thinking how this could be an alternate universe series of events to My Neighbor Totoro. The mother dies in the hospital and Mei and Satsuki's father becomes familiar with a nurse at the hospital during his mourning. Mei actually dies, drowning in the river following the multple sightings of Totoro, the shinigami or God of Death. Satusuki then begins to lose grasp of reality and her own sightings of Totoro begin to turn sinister.
