14. John cheever, 『The Stories of John Cheever』 * 단편집이기는 하지만 존 치버의 참된 대표작으로 퓰리처상 수상작이다.

16-18. John Dos Passos, 『U.S.A』 * 『1919』, 『The 42nd Parallel』, 『The Big Money』로 이어지는 3부작인데 우리 나라에서는 1권만 번역되어 있는 것으로 안다. 작가가 되려는 사람에게는 문체에 대해서 많은 공부가 될 것이다.
19. Michael Crichton, 『The Andromeda Strain』 * 「쥬라기 공원」의 원작자인 마이클 크라이튼의 뛰어난 공상과학소설이다.

John O'Hara, 『Assembly』 * 마지막은 단편집이지만 어느 장편소설 못지않게 좋은 작품이다. 존 오하라는 미국에서 그의 작품이 영화로 가장 많이 만들어진 작가 가운데 한 사람으로서, 영어 소설을 처음 읽는 사람이라면 존 오하라부터 시작하도록 권하고 싶다. 그의 문장은 대화체가 많아서 이해가 쉽고, 어스퀸 콜드웰보다도 때로는 더 재미있으며, 너무 외설이 심한 『The Ewings』이외에는 상당한 문학적 수준도 유지한다. 이 밖에도 그의 작품은 많으며, 영어 공부를 위해서라면 그의 소설을 모조리 읽어도 좋을 것 같다.

John Steinbeck, 『The Winter of Our Discontent(불만의 겨울)』 * 존 스타인벡은 내가 개인적으로 가장 좋아하는 작가로서, 문체가 간결하고 감성이 짙은 작품을 주로 썼다. 문장도 쉬운 편이어서 어스킨 콜드웰이나 존 오하라보다 문학적으로 수준이 높은 작가를 찾는 사람은 스타인벡부터 시작하면 좋겠다. 그리고 처음 책을 읽기 시작하면 한 작가에 한 작품씩 돌아가며 읽지 말고 스타인벡이나 포크너 같은 한 작가의 모든 작품을 읽고 난 다음에야 다른 작가로 넘어가도록 권한다. 그러면 한 작가의 작품 세계와 문체에 익숙해져 접하기가 쉽고, 문학성도 깊이 들여다볼 수가 있을 것이다.
