Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate:

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

And summer’s lease hath all too short a date;

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,

And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;

And every fair from fair sometime declines,

By chance or nature’s changing course untrimm'd;

But thy eternal summer shall not fade,

Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st;

Nor shall death brag thou wander'stin his shade,

When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st:

So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,

So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.


내 그대를 여름날에 비할 수 있으리까?

그대는 훨씬 사랑스럽고 온화한 것을

거친 바람은 5월의 향긋한 꽃봉오리들을 흔들고,

우리에게 허락된 여름은 너무 짧구려.

때론 하늘의 눈이 뜨겁도록 반짝이고,

그의 황금빛 안색이 흐려지는 것도 가끔 있기 마련

어느 아름다움도 시간이 흐르면 쇠퇴하고

우연이나 자연으로 인해 그 모습이 사라져

그러나 그대의 영원한 여름만은 절대로 시들지 않으리.

그대가 지닌 그 아름다움 또한 잃지 않을 것이고

죽음의 신도 그대가 자신의 그림자에서 방황한다고 자랑치 못하리

그대는 이 불멸의 시 속에서 영원할 테니

인간이 숨을 쉬고 눈이 있어 볼 수 있는 한

이 시는 오래도록 살아 그대에게 생명을 줄지어다.
