플라톤 차명 대화편인 "알키비아데스 II"는 헬레니즘 시대에 저작된 대화편으로, '기도'를 주제로 다룸.

여기에 재미있는 일화가 소개되어 있는데, 아테네와 스파르타가 전쟁했는데 아테네가 패하자 아테네인들이 아문(원래 이집트 신이지만 제우스와 동일시됨)에게 신탁을 요청했다고 함. 다음은 그 본문:









A quarrel having arisen between the Athenians and the Spartans, it befell our city to be always unsuccessful in every battle by land and sea, and she could never win a victory. So the Athenians, in their annoyance at this result, and at a loss for some means of finding a deliverance from the trouble they were in, took counsel together and decided that the best thing they could do was to send and inquire of Ammon; and moreover, to ask also for what reason the gods granted victory to the Spartans rather than to themselves:

“for we”—such was the message— “offer up to them more and finer sacrifices than any of the Greeks, and have adorned their temples with votive emblems as no other people have done, and presented to the gods the costliest and stateliest processions year by year, and spent more money thus than all the rest of the Greeks together. But the Spartans have never taken any such pains, and indeed are so neglectful in their behavior to the gods, that they make a practice of sacrificing defective victims, and generally are very much behind us in the honors that they pay, though the wealth they possess is quite equal to that of our city.”  

When they had so spoken, and added the question, what they should do in order to find a deliverance from the trouble they were in, the prophet's only answer1— evidently it was all that the god allowed—was to call them to him and say:

“Thus saith Ammon to the Athenians: I would rather have the reverent reserve of the Spartans than all the ritual of the Greeks.”  



아테네인들과 스파르타인들 사이에서 싸움이 벌어졌는데, 땅에서든 바다에서든 모든 전투에서 우리 도시는 실패를 봤고 승리할 수 없었다네. 그레서 아테네인들은 이 결과에 곤혹을 느껴, 이 결과에서 해방되는 법을 찾으려고 어쩔 줄 몰라 했고, 서로 의논하다가 이렇게 결론을 내렸네. 그들이 할 수 있는 최선의 것은 아몬께 묻는 것이라고. 또한 무슨 이유로 신들이 아테네인들보다는 스파르타인들에게 승리를 허용하시는지 묻는 것이라고: 

"우리는" —이것이 메시지라네— "신들께 어떤 헬라스인들보다도 더 많고 더 좋은 희생물을 바칩니다. 그리고 신들의 성전을 다른 어떤 백성들보다도 봉헌된 휘장으로 장식합니다. 그리고 신들께 가장 값지고 위엄찬 행렬을 매년 바쳤습니다. 그래서 나머지 헬라스인들보다 더 많은 돈을 썼습니다. 그러나 스파르타인들은 이것들에 전혀 애쓰지 않았고, 신들에 대한 그들의 행위에서 참으로 게을렀습니다. 그들은 결함있게 희생제를 했으며, 그들이 지불하는 존경에 있어서는 일반적으로 우리보다 아래입니다. 우리 도시만큼이나 부유한데도 말입니다."
