“To whom the Bell Tolls” by Ernest Hemingway and “Homage to Catalonia” by George Orwell are post- Spanish Civil war novels that show the disgusting aspects of the conflict between two ideologies; Fascism and Communism who contradictorily show similar ideas in many aspects. Although the two book discuss the Spanish Civil War and have some similarities in their approach towards the disappointments of revolution, they approached in a very different way towards the theme of sacrifice and mortality as well their stance in communism.
Both Hemingway and Orwell express same stance in their disappointments on the revolution with similar methods of contrasting the two situations. Orwell through his story experiences how war and power can change people through time by viewing the extreme contrast which Barcelona; the land of anarchist; is has through the war. Similarly, Hemingway through the story shows Pablo, the republican guerrilla leader losing the courage and intelligence in contrast to the past when the revolution had just started. Each book contrasts the past and present with the protagonists of the revolution gaining their power and shows how the revolution weakens with the greed and desire which distract the action. During this, the authors also reveal their great disappointment and unpleasantness on such disappointment through either a monologue of himself or his alter ego. Through showing these contrasting situations both authors show directly their personal describe their negative impressions on the revolution. Although they are similar in their direction and stance, Orwell describes his disappointment in a rather sinical way with dark humour and acts sarcastic whilst Hemingway describes the disappointment in a more emotional way. Hemingway and Orwell also show the disappointment by revealing their disappoint of war through their ego/ alter ego’s emotional and ideological change during revolution. Orwell in Homage to Catalonia acts in a relatively optimistic way at the introduction being confident about the revolution whereby as the story progresses, he realises that the war is very much different to his thoughts and continues to grow the scepticism on war. In a similar way, Hemingway describes Robert Jordan becoming more less motivated in the mission of blowing bridge and more focused on his growing love towards Maria whilst also showing Robert Jordan questioning the incompetent leaders of leaders the republican camp exposing their plan. Through using these methods to appeal their disappointment on the revolution, Hemingway and Orwell expose the corruption of the republicans during the civil war and emphasise the imperfection of socialism and the weakness it has in which communism does not have any means to suppress the corrupt leaders.
Unlike the similarities two authors have in their ideas such as disappointment, the two author describe the theme of sacrifice and mortality in an extremely contrasting mood. This is due to the differences in which the stories have in foundation. “Homage to Catalonia” is a report describing his own feelings and experiences in a realistic manner whilst “To Whom the Bell Tolls” focuses on the main objective and classifies all story before the event as a preparation for the climax. Due to this systematic difference, Hemingway emphasises the mortality and describes the deaths of individuals in war in such way that death in war is a “sacred” sacrifice to achieve their ideology so he can justify the storyline. In comparison to this, George Orwell views the sacrifice in war to be obvious requirement of war and shows how most sacrifice in the battlefield is meaningless in a very emotionless manner. For instance, Orwell in his second visit at Barcelona sees many individuals who thought eachother as “comrades” fighting and killing eachother due to their ideology (anarchy and communist) and reveals the cruel reality on how the anarchism is oppressed after this incidence even though numerous anarchist individuals sacrificed for their ideology. Hemingway on the other hand shows Robert Jordan who proceeds to sacrifice himself to save Maria and the guerrilla band. During this action, he describes the realisation which Robert Jordan experiences in relation to his meaning of life and his connection with his father and grandfather. This part of the book glorifies the sacrifice which Robert Jordan does by emphasising the results of sacrifice and Robert Jordan’s acceptive behaviour towards his fate.
Another theme which the two authors contrast is their idea towards communism in the book. Although both authors announce themselves as socialist, Orwell shows hatred and disgust towards the Stalinist Communism which was Major in Spain during the civil war as he thought the Stalinist Communism was corrupt and totalitarian and as a result, he applied as a part of POUM which was an anarchist party. I comparison, Hemingway was much open to the Stalinist communism, and he shared stance with the republican party. This is well reflected in the stance of the two books as Orwell shows hatred against both the Fascist and Communism whilst Hemingway stands up for the communist. An example showing this is their level of criticism against communism. Orwell in his book aggressively depicts hypocrisy of communism showing how the communists changed from revolutionary proletarians into bourgeois which they very much slaughtered for the “freedom” they desired and are oppressing other ideas like anarchism. In comparison to this, Hemingway in his work is busy trying to frame the fascists as ‘Bad, Evil demon’ and Republicans to be ‘Good, righteous people’s Army’ with little mentions about the corrupt nature the republicans had during the Spanish civil war. This is one of the main reasons why Orwell’s book is thought to be a real reportage while Hemingway’s book is denigrated as fiction novel.
Overall, Orwell and Hemingway show some similar areas in their disappointment on the revolution even though they showed more significant differences in areas such as their view on sacrifice, mortality, and communism in the Spanish Civil War due to their differences in format and political beliefs. Through the comparison of two writing which view the civil war in a contrasting way, the readers are able to objectively understand the key aspects and themes which Spanish civil war possesses in relation to the conflict between individuals and ideologies.
