The first three chapters are virtually unreadable. It felt like arriving at someone’s door who clearly has no intention of allowing you into his house or even exchanging pleasantries. Ada is a novel that made me feel stupid as often as it thrilled me. It’s a kind of pun or parody festival and while I loved all the puns I got there were so many, often multilingual or literary jokes, that went over my head that at times I felt like I was watching University Challenge and horrible holes were being revealed in my intelligence, not a very flattering feeling.

처음 세 장은 사실상 읽을 수 없음. 이 소설은 마치 나를 초대하지도 집에 들여보낼 의도도 없는 사람의 집에 도착한 느낌이었음. 심지어 그 사람은 나와 농담을 나누고 싶어하지도 않은 느낌도 들고. 아다는 자주 내가 바보라는 생각이 들게 한 만큼 흥분시켰던 소설임, 뭐 일종의 말장난이나 패러디의 축제가 벌어지는 느낌이랄까. 그런데 모든 말장난은 너무 많았고, 종종 다국어를 이용한 문학적인 농담들이 내 머리 위에 가득해서 뭔가 대학에서 개최하는 지식 자랑 콘테스트를 보는 것 같았음. 그것 때문에 내 지능의 끔찍한 구멍들이 드러나고 있는 느낌이 들어서 기분이 영…
