If it seems out of place to assert that the wide adoption of the use of firepower in the sixteenth century was in itself a backward step, it is not untrue that cavalry experienced from this time a "relative and absolute decline", or that heavy cavalry no longer carried as much weight when deciding the course of the battles.

the increased role of the infantry and the artillery did not mean that the cavalry was relegated to a position of spectator.

gendarmes and pistoleers played a considerable role in the battles of the wars of religion.

consider too that despite its progress and even if it had learned to stand up to the cavalrymen, the infantry remained relatively immobile and still had difficulty in combining the use pikes and firepower.

if the heavy cavalry was only one of the tools available to the general, it remained capable of carrying the day.

he who could defeat the enemy cavalry was certain, if not of total victory, then at least of not losing.
