"When Adam delved, and Eve span, who was then the gentleman? From the beginning all men by nature were created alike, and our bondage or servitude came in by the unjust oppression of naughty men. For if God would have had any bondmen from the beginning, he would have appointed who should be bond, and who free. And therefore I exhort you to consider that now the time is come, appointed to us by God, in which ye may (if ye will) cast off the yoke of bondage, and recover liberty."


"아담이 땅을 일구고 이브가 옷감을 짤 때, 누가 귀인이었는가? 태초부터 모든 인간은 평등하게 창조되었으며, 우리의 예속과 노역은 악인들의 부당한 억압으로 인해 생겨난 것이다. 만약 처음에 하나님께서 노예가 있길 원하셨다면, 누가 노예가 되고 누가 노예가 되지 않을지 미리 정해 놓으셨을 것이다. 그러므로 너희에게 말하노니, 이제 하나님께서 정하신 때가 왔다. 너희가 원한다면, 예속의 굴레를 벗어던지고 자유를 되찾을 수 있는 때가 왔다."
