전 세계의 어린이들에게 사랑을 받는 영국의 동화 작가 로알드 달. 그런데 최근 영국의 유명 출판사 Puffin Books에서 로알드 달의 작품들을 검열해 출판한다는 소식이 알려지면서 세계적으로 많은 논란이 일고 있다. 살만 루슈디도 이에 반대하는 목소리를 냈을 정도인데(Roald Dahl was no angel but this is absurd censorship. Puffin Books and the Dahl estate should be ashamed.), 대체 어떻게 검열을 한 건지 알아보도록 하자.


1. 외모/정신상태 묘사

미친, 뚱뚱한, 거대한, 키 큰, 키 작은 등등 외모나 정신상태를 묘사하는 형용사 다수가 삭제됨.


2. 특정 성별을 지칭하는 표현

man, woman, boy, girl, father, mother 등등 특정 성별을 지칭하는 표현 대부분이 person/people, children, parent, folk 같은 성별 중립적인 표현으로 교체됨. heroine, hag, maid, king 등의 단어도 마찬가지.


3. 여성 관련 표현


Besides, there are plenty of other reasons why women might wear wigs and there is certainly nothing wrong with that


'이 외에도 여자들은 다양한 이유로 가발을 쓸 수 있으며, 전혀 이상한 일이 아니랍니다'

마녀들이 대머리라 가발을 쓴다는 내용 뒤에 이 문장이 삽입됨.

여성의 직업의 예시로 나온 슈퍼마켓 계산원, 타이피스트가 일류 과학자, 사업가로 교체됨

매질(spanking)이 단순한 훈계(talking to)로 바뀜


“My mother says it’s not ladylike and it looks ugly to see a girl’s jaws going up and down like mine…”

여자답지 못한(unladylike)이 품위없는(undignified)으로 바뀜


Her face, I’m afraid, was neither a thing of beauty nor a joy forever

이 구절은 존 키츠의 시 Endymion에 나오는 구절(A thing of beauty is a joy for ever)의 패러디인데 그걸 모르는 편집자들이 잘라버림


4. 문화/인종 관련 표현

멕시코인 비하 표현이라 삭제
