Pirate has become famous for his Banana Breakfasts. Messmates throng here from all over England, even some who are allergic or outright hostile to bananas, just to watch—for the politics of bacteria, the soil’s stringing of rings and chains in nets on1ly God can tell the meshes of, have seen the fruit thrive often to lengths of a foot and a half, yes amazing but true.
Pirate in the lavatory stands pissing, without a thought in his head. Then he threads himself into a wool robe he wears inside out so as to keep his cigarette pocket hidden, not that this works too well, and circling the warm bodies of friends makes his way to French windows, slides outside into the cold, groans as it hits the fillings in his teeth, climbs a spiral ladder ringing to the roof garden and stands for a bit, watching the river. The sun is still below the horizon. The day feels like rain, but for now the air is uncommon1ly clear. The great power station, and the gasworks beyond, stand precisely: crystals grown in morning’s beaker, stacks, vents, towers, plumbing, gnarled emissions of steam and smoke . . .

해적은 바나나 아침 식사로 유명해졌다. 영국 전역에서 같이 식사할 동료들이, 심지어 몇몇 이들은 알러지가 있거나 분명 바나나를 싫어했어도 보기만 하려고 모여들었기를—세균의 운영으로 인해 오로지 신만이 설명할 수 있도록 흙에 있는 그물 모양의 조직에서 환(環)(ring)과 사슬이 길게 이어져, 그 과일 대부분이 1피트 하고도 반 길이로 잘 자란 걸 봤으니, 그렇기로서니 놀랍지만 사실이었다.
해적은 화장실에서 서서 머릿속 생각을 비우고 오줌을 눈다. 그런 뒤 그는 그런다고 썩 잘 되지는 않았지만 주머니에 감춰둔 담배를 간수하려고 뒤집어 입은 양모 가운을 몸에 끼우고는, 친우들의 따듯한 몸을 피해서 지나 유리문(French window)으로 나아가, 추위 속에 치아의 충전재가 쑤숴지기라도 한듯 신음하며 슬며시 바깥으로 나와, 나선형 사닥다리를 타 옥상 정원까지 빙빙 돌고 올라가서는 잠시 멈춰서서 강가를 바라본다. 태양은 아직 지평선 아래에 있다. 비가 올 것 같은 날이나, 지금으로서는 유난히 맑다. 커다란 발전소와 그 너머의 가스 공장이 분명 위치해 있다: 아침에서의 비커에 커지는 결정체들, 굴뚝들, 연도(煙道)들, 건물들, 배관시설, 구불구불한 증기와 연기의 배기(排氣)가 . . .
세균의 운영으로 인해(for the politics of bacteria): politics를 운영으로 해석. 세균이 특별한 건가? 뭔가 뭔가임...
오로지 신만이 설명할 수 있도록 흙에 있는 그물 모양의 조직에서 환(環)(ring)과 사슬이 길게 이어져(the soil’s stringing of rings and chains in nets on1ly God can tell the meshes of): 대충 dna를 설명하는 것 같음. 환, 사슬, 그물이 그 증거. Dna의 변형을 얘기하는 건가? 약 45cm나 되는 바나나니까.

나선형 사닥다리(spiral ladder): 율리시스 1장의 시작(멀리건)을 패러디하는 것이라는 의견도 있고, dna 구조라는 말도 있음
아침에서의 비커에 커지는 결정체들(crystals grown in morning’s beaker): 뭔지 모르겠음... 아마 눈이라 생각하긴 하는데, 비커는 또 뭔지...
