There was a peasant near Jerusalem who acquired a young gamecock which looked a shabby little thing, but which put on brave feathers as spring advanced, and was resplendent with arched and orange neck by the time the fig trees were letting out leaves from their end-tips.


This peasant was poor, he lived in a cottage of mud-brick, and had on1ly a dirty little inner courtyard with a tough fig tree for all his territory. He worked hard among the vines and olives and wheat of his master, then came home to sleep in the mud-brick cottage by the path. But he was proud of his young rooster. In the shut-in yard were three shabby hens which laid small eggs, shed the few feathers they had, and made a disproportionate amount of dirt. There was also, in a corner under a straw roof, a dull donkey that often went out with the peasant to work, but sometimes stayed at home. And there was the peasant's wife, a black-browed youngish woman who did not work too hard. She threw a little grain, or the remains of the porridge mess, to the fowls, and she cut green fodder with a sickle for the ass.


The young cock grew to a certain splendour. By some freak of destiny, he was a dandy rooster, in that dirty little yard with three patchy hens. He learned to crane his neck and give shrill answers to the crowing of other cocks, beyond the walls, in a world he knew nothing of. But there was a special fiery colour to his crow, and the distant calling of the other cocks roused him to unexpected outbursts.


"How he sings," said the peasant, as he got up and pulled his day-shirt over his head.


"He is good for twenty hens," said the wife.



 예루살렘 근방 한 농부는 어린 싸움닭 한 마리를 기르고 있었는데, 꾀죄죄해 보였던 고것이 봄이 깊어짐에 따라 화려한 깃털들로 치장하니, 무화과나무가 끝자락에서 잎들을 내보낼 즈음에는 굽은 목이 등자색으로 눈부셨다.


 이 농부는 가난해 흙벽돌집에 살았고, 단 하나만 있는 지저분하고 조그만 안뜰도 땅 전체에 억센 무화과나무 한 그루만 있었다. 그는 주인의 포도나무와 올리브나무와 밀 사이에서 열심히 일하고 귀가해 길가의 흙벽돌집에서 잤다. 하지만 그도 어린 수탉만큼은 자랑스러워했다. 틀어박힌 뜰에는 꾀죄죄한 암탉 세 마리가 있었는데, 작은 알들을 낳고서 얼마 없는 깃털들을 털갈이하고는 어울리지 않게 오물을 만들어냈다. 또 초가지붕 아래 구석엔 둔한 당나귀가 있었기를, 농부와 일하러 자주 갔으나 때론 집에 있었다. 그리고 젊지만 그다지 열심히 일하지는 않는 짙은 눈썹의 농부 아내도 있었다. 그녀는 약간의 곡식이나 남은 포리지 음식물을 닭들한테 던져주고, 낫으로 나귀에게 줄 녹사료를 벴다.


 어린 수탉은 정말 돋보이게 자랐다. 무슨 희한한 운명인지, 누덕누덕한 암탉 세 마리가 있는 지저분하고 조그만 뜰에서 멋쟁이 수탉이었던 것이다. 녀석은(he) 목을 길게 빼, 벽 너머 모르는 세상에서 꼬꾜 우는 다른 수탉들에게 새된 소리로 답하는 걸 배웠다. 그러나 녀석의(his) 울음엔 특별하게도 불같은 특색이 있었고, 멀리 떨어진 다른 수탉들의 울음이 뜻밖에도 분출하게끔 자극했다.


 "울음 한 번 기똥차네(How he sings)," 농부가 일어나 평상복(day-shirt)을 머리 위로 잡아당기며 말했다.


 "암탉 스무 마리라도 거뜬하지," 그의 아내가 말했다.
