how the hell did james joyce know all that shit?


this isn't a shitpost. swear to god.


I'm in a Ulysses reading group right now, and Joyce's breadth of knowledge is astounding -- medicine, history, physics, epistemology, phenomenology, obscure newspaper advertisements, early film, dead languages, obscure printing technologies, Egyptian mythology, color theory... it seems like nothing escapes him. multiple times I've tracked down a reference in the Gifford, thinking there's no fucking way this was intentional, on1ly to find out that it is intentional, and forms yet another node in a seemingly infinite network across the book.


as far as I know, Joyce quit school after 20 and lived on patronage/teaching gigs until he died. how did he learn languages as disparate as Norwegian and Hebrew? how did he find the time to learn about fetal development? the man was a genius -- obviously -- but how, physically how and where, did he learn all of this shit to put into his book?

나 지금 <율리시스> 독서 모임 중인데, 조이스의 지식 범위는 진짜 경이로울 지경..


의학, 역사, 물리학, 인식론, 현상학, 듣도 보도 못한 신문 광고, 초기 영화, 사어(dead languages), 난해한 인쇄 기술, 이집트 신화, 색채 이론 등등... 


조이스의 손아귀를 벗어난 게 아무것도 없는 것 같음.


기포드(Don Gifford의 주석서)에서 레퍼런스 찾아볼 때마다 '설마 씨발 이것까지 의도했겠어?' 싶어서 찾아보면, 진짜 의도한 게 맞고, 심지어 그게 책 전체를 관통하는 무한해 보이는 네트워크의 또 다른 연결점이 된다는 걸 확인할 때가 한두 번이 아니야.


내가 알기로 조이스는 스무 살 넘어서 학교 그만두고 죽을 때까지 후원금이나 가르치는 일(teaching gigs)로 먹고살았잖


근데 노르웨이어랑 히브리어처럼 완전히 동떨어진 언어들을 어떻게 배운 거임?


태아 발달에 대해 공부할 시간은 또 언제 냈고?


그 사람이 천재라는 건 알겠어. 당연하지. 근데 물리적으로 도대체 '어떻게', 그리고 '어디서' 이 모든 걸 배워서 책에다 집어넣은 거냐고?
