Socialization is a learning process that begins shortly after birth. Early childhood is the period of the most intense and the most crucial socialization. It is then that we acquire language and learn the fundamentals of our culture. It is also when much of our personality takes shape. However, we continue to be socialized throughout our lives. As we age, we take on new positions and need to learn the proper roles for them. We also have experiences that teach us lessons and potentially lead us to change our expectations, beliefs, and personality. For example, the experience of being deceived is likely to cause a man or a woman to be distrustful of others.

해석

사회화는 태어나자마자 시작되는 학습 과정이다. 초기 유년기는 가장 강도 높고 가장 중요한 사회화의 시기이다. 우리가 언어를 습득하고 우리 문화의 기초를 배우는 시기가 바로 그때이다. 그 시기는 또한 성격의 상당 부분이 형성되는 때이기도 하다. 하지만, 우리는 일생을 통해 계속해서 사회화된다. 나이가 들어감에 따라, 우리는 새로운 위치를 맡게 되고 그에 어울리는 적절한 역할을 배워야 한다. 우리에게는 또한 우리에게 교훈을 가르쳐서 잠재적으로 우리의 기대치, 신념, 성격 등을 바꾸도록 이끌어 주는 경험들이 있다. 예를 들어, 속은 경험이 있다면 남자건 여자건 다른 사람들을 믿지 않게 되기 쉽다.
