Which voice will you follow?

여러분은 어떤 목소리를 따르겠습니까?

The question of whether you are teachable can – of course – not be answered by me. It can be answered only by you. Yet let me offer you some guidance. The spiritual teachers of humankind have a saying which states, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” The meaning is that you will not be able to find a spiritual teaching – or recognize the validity of it – until you are ready to take a step higher on the spiritual path. Being ready is truly a matter of the inner condition of your total being. However, it is quite possible – and common – that people are ready for a higher teaching at inner levels of their beings, yet their outer minds block the acceptance of the new teaching, causing them to cling to what is familiar.

【〔여러분이 가르침을 받을 수 있는지〕의 질문】은 - 물론 - 【나】에 의해서 대답될 수 없습니다. 그것은 【여러분】에 의해서만 대답될 수 있습니다. For example, if you have found this book and read to this point, I can assure you that – at the higher levels of your being – you are ready for the teachings that will be given in this book. However, it is possible that a part of your outer mind, your ego, will resist your reading of this book or your acceptance of its teachings. In order to overcome this resistance, you need to become aware of the voice of the ego, which will seek to block your acceptance of ideas that can set you free from its control. The ego can be a very loud voice that seeks to play on your fear, by making you fear that certain ideas in this book are false and will take you to hell. Yet the ego can also be a very subtle and persuasive voice that seeks to make you believe you don’t really have to question or expand your current mental box. It will make you think you already know all you need to know or that the teachings in this book are inferior to your existing beliefs. The message is that you can safely stay where you are comfortable, meaning where the ego has you under its control.

Take note of what I am saying here. I am in no way asking you to blindly accept the teachings I give in this book. What I am truly saying is that if you have found this book, your own higher being knows that this book can give you the keys to your spiritual freedom. Yet that freedom cannot be won by blindly believing in what is stated in this book. It can be won only by using the teachings in this book as a key to unlocking the inner understanding that you already have in your higher being. In other words, the real key to spiritual growth is to bring your outer mind into alignment with your higher being—a concept I will later explain in greater detail. For now I simply want to make you aware that I am not asking you to believe me or my statements in this book. I am asking you to carefully look beyond the outer mind and connect to your own higher being. I am asking you to neither believe the outer teachings in this book nor the outer teachings to which your ego is attached. I am asking you to go within yourself and unlock your inner ability to know what is valid, to know what will take you to a higher level of understanding.

The real key to having the maximum benefit from this book is to engage in a process of self-examination. As you read this book, examine your reactions to the statements in it. Be aware of the voice of the ego, which will always resist your growth. And be aware of the subtle, inner voice that always inspires you to look beyond your mental box and reach for the greater freedom that comes only from inner knowing. That inner knowing is not the automatic result of believing an outer teaching. However, you can use an outer teaching to stimulate the process of getting answers from within. More on this later in the book.
