The outer savior versus the inner path

외부의 구세주 대 내면의 길

Let us consider how the two forces described above have been outplayed in the religious life of this planet. Many religions have followed a distinct pattern, and although I will later talk about this in greater detail, I want to make you aware of it at this early stage. Most religions have been started by one person who attained a direct connection to the spiritual realm. This person then became the open door through which the spiritual teachers of humankind brought forth a new spiritual teaching. That teaching was aimed at giving people spiritual freedom, meaning that it was designed to help people establish their own inner connections to their higher selves and the spiritual realm. The new teaching was – in its original form – the voice that called people to go beyond their old mental boxes and open their minds to a higher understanding. The leader of the new religion was meant to be an example to follow rather than an exception. He was meant to show that all people can go within and attain a higher understanding.

Yet for practically all religions, the ego eventually took over and turned the founder into someone who was so above and beyond other human beings that no one can follow in his footsteps. The ego’s desire for security, its desire for a guaranteed salvation, turned the original teaching into a rigid doctrine that presents an outer church or an outer savior as the only road to salvation. For example, when Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no man cometh to the Father but by me” (John 14:6), he did not mean that the outer religion of Christianity is the only road to salvation. This is clearly seen by another statement in which Jesus said that the kingdom of God is within you (Luke 17:21). When you take these two statements together, you see that the only road to the Father, the only road to salvation, is to become one with Christ, with the Christ consciousness that Jesus embodied and thus exemplified for all who have eyes to see. The true meaning is that no man comes to the Father except by becoming one with the Christ consciousness, by letting that mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:5).

My point here is to show you that being saved – or whatever you want to call the ultimate transcendence of human limitations – is not an outer, mechanical process. It is not a matter of being a member of a particular church, believing its doctrines and following its rituals. It is an inner, creative process that requires you to fundamentally change your consciousness, to be spiritually reborn, as Jesus explained (John 3:3). As true spiritual teachers, we have a desire to see you rise above the human condition, but we know this must happen within the framework of the ultimate law of this universe, namely the Law of Free Will. I cannot change your consciousness for you—only you can change your own consciousness. You must do so consciously by understanding how to rise above the duality that leads to all suffering.

The bottom line is that for a person to be teachable, he or she must realize that the only road to spiritual freedom is through a change in consciousness. And that change can be brought about only by you. I can give you the keys to spiritual freedom, as I will do in this book. Yet the locks are located in your mind, so you must decide to insert the keys into the locks and open the doors that lead to freedom. I cannot do this for you and neither can anyone else. Thus, you will not truly place yourself on the path to spiritual freedom until you accept this fact and take responsibility for changing what is – or should be – your personal domain, namely your mind. It is only when you are willing to acknowledge the need to change your state of consciousness – and accept your responsibility for doing so – that you become fully teachable. And only when you are fully teachable, will you get the full benefit from this book.

The purpose of this introduction is to tell you what this book will and will not do for you, and you now have a clearer picture. This book will give you the keys to spiritual freedom, but it will not give you spiritual freedom. You must use the keys in this book to unlock the locks in your mind that block your freedom. And this is a work that neither a book nor a spiritual teacher (whether on Earth or in the spiritual realm) can do for you. Thus, it remains an inescapable fact – a fact that the ego will deny to the end – that you are ultimately responsible for attaining spiritual freedom. No one can change your consciousness for you, for your consciousness is your responsibility.
