What was the original purpose for religion on the physical Earth? Well, if you look at the story of the Garden of Eden, you will see that it does not say that Adam and Eve went to church every Sunday. It does not even say that there was a church in the Garden, so one might conclude that Adam and Eve did not have any religion. Why didn’t they have a religion? Because they walked and talked with God, or rather with a spiritual teacher. If you have direct contact with a spiritual teacher, why would you need an outer religion to serve as an intermediary between you and the spiritual realm? If there is nothing between you and direct contact with the spiritual realm, you obviously need no intermediary outside yourself. Thus, we might say that the Garden of Eden needed no church because it was a church, it was an environment where most beings lived their religion every moment.

My point is that the physical Earth is designed as a place for beings who have lost the direct contact with their spiritual teachers. This is illustrated by the fact that most people on Earth have no direct awareness of or contact with spiritual teachers who are beyond the physical realm, including their own higher selves. When people do not have such direct contact, there is a real danger that their state of consciousness becomes a closed circle that leads them into a downward, self-reinforcing spiral. In order to prevent this, people on Earth were given religion as a replacement for the direct contact with a spiritual teacher.

This is an essential realization that will give you an entirely new understanding of the purpose of religion. You have probably been brought up to believe that the role of religion is to save you and that only members of the right religion will be saved. However, the true role of religion is to serve as an intermediary between you and the real saviors of humankind, namely the spiritual teachers of the Ascended Host who can help people save themselves.

The essential realization about religion is that religion was never meant to be an end in itself. There is no one who can be saved as a result of following a religion on Earth. What a religion can do for you is to help you establish a direct, inner contact with your spiritual teacher, who will then help you attain the state of spiritual self-sufficiency that is the real key to your salvation. In other words, the outer religion itself is insignificant, for the real purpose of religion is to help you attain the inner contact. That is precisely why Jesus said that the kingdom of God is within you (Luke 17:21).

If a religion helps you attain a direct, inner contact with your spiritual teacher, then it has fulfilled its purpose. If a religion fails to do this, possibly even blocks that contact, then its purpose has been perverted and it has become a dualistic religion. Yet why would anyone want to pervert the purpose of religion? Well, how about doing what all good detectives do, namely look for those who have a motive, those who stand to gain from the crime.
