Let me illustrate this with a couple of historical examples. Most Westerners know little about Buddhism and often think that the Buddha appeared in a spiritual vacuum and started a new religion. In reality, neither assumption is true. The Buddha was born in a culture that was domnated by Hinduism, but it was not the original form of Hinduism. Instead, it had come to emphasize the outer religion and its leaders as the key to salvation. It was a very elitist religion with a group of Brahmins (priests) who thought they were above the people and that they could administer salvation to the people. They also felt the need to withhold certain teachings from the people, thinking they were not advanced enough to understand them. The Buddha gave forth a teaching which emphasized an inner transformation of consciousness as the key to enlightenment, or salvation. He also said that what you needed in order to obtain this salvation was to master your own mind. This could only be done from within yourself, not by following outer rules or rituals and not by having anyone do it for you.

Yet what the Buddha gave was not a new religion. It was a universal teaching, describing the Path of Oneness. This teaching could – and still can – be practiced by anyone, no matter what outer religion they might follow. In other words, the Buddha was truly trying to give Hindus a teaching that could bring them back to the essence of Hinduism—the essence of all true religion.

Because the leaders of the Hindu religion saw this as a threat, and because so many people followed them, Hinduism was not reformed by the Buddha’s teachings, and thus a new religion eventually emerged. Yet that was not the Buddha’s intent, nor was it his intent that this new religion would split into factions, some of which have become just as stuck in outer doctrines and rituals as the Hinduism the Buddha sought to transform.

Let us now look at Jesus, who appeared in a society domnated by the religion of Judaism. This religion is based on the Book of Genesis and thus it traces its origin back to the Garden of Eden, namely Maitreya’s Mystery School. Nevertheless, this religion had become as stuck in rituals, doctrines and rules as Hinduism was at the time of the Buddha. The Jews believed that the key to their salvation was the remission of sins and that only the priesthood of their religion had the power to remit sins. Thus, if you did not obey the priests, they could refuse to remit your sins and send you to hell. We might therefore say that the priests of the Jewish religion had absolute power over their followers.

Jesus did not seek to draw the Jews out of Judaism to a new religion. Instead, he sought to free Judaism from its reliance on outer rituals, such as animal sacrifices and an elitist priesthood. He directly challenged the leaders of the Jewish religion, and the two main aspects of this challenge were:

• Jesus stated that the kingdom of God is within you, meaning that the key to salvation is inside yourself (Luke 17:21). Thus, you do not need an outer religion or its priests in order to be saved.

• Jesus claimed to have the power to remit sins and he gave that power to his disciples (John 20:23). Yet in reality, that power comes from the universal Christ mind – manifest on Earth as the Holy Spirit – which is the only force that can transform your sins. For only when you put on the mind of Christ and rise above the consciousness of sin will you be fully free of sin. Jesus did not mean to imply that he would remove all of humankind’s sins. He meant to show people how to put on the mind of Christ, and then the universal mind of Christ will remit their sins.
