It should be easy to see that by these two measures alone, Jesus had challenged the very essence of the Jewish priesthood’s power over the people. If the people had believed Jesus, the priests would have lost their power and their privileged positions. Since they were not willing to give this up, their only option was to kill Jesus. They even managed to make it seem like this was done in the best interest of the people. After all, it was expedient that one man should die (John 11:50) rather than a whole nation perish (as if those were the only options). Because most Jews did not accept Jesus and his teaching and did not stand up to their leaders, Christianity emerged as a separate religion. Yet Christianity quickly became as rigid and ritualized as Judaism, and this trend has continued to this day. In reality, Jesus did not come to start a new rigid religion. He came to bring forth a universal teaching about the inner path to salvation, the Path of Oneness. It was his hope that all people would discover this universal path and thus follow it regardless of their outer religious affiliation (or lack of it).

If you take a look at the history of religion on this planet, you will quickly see that the pattern described in these two examples has been repeated numerous times. A religion starts out by promoting a universal teaching about inner transformation, but after a while, it is transformed into a rigid system that claims you cannot be saved from within yourself. A religion starts out with a non-dualistic teaching and is then transformed into a dualistic religion. If you are to claim your spiritual freedom, you need to understand why this happens.
