1일차 - 제노의 '무리' (Zeno's Herd of Cattle)





1990년 9월 27일, 날씨 맑음

......

젠장할 제노, 이게 마지막이 되어야 할 텐데 - 켄 말로는 공장이 거의 비어 있다고 한다.

한 달, 한 달이 다 되어서야 비로소 제대로 된 수면을 취했다. 우리 밖으로 절대 나오지 않는 무리보다 더 뒤척이고 더 많은 잠꼬대를 했다.

......

요즘 마을에 가운을 입은 무리가 몇 마리 더 있는 것 같다. 물론 가운을 입은 사람들 중 일부는 우리 동족이지만, 낯선 얼굴도 몇 명 있었다. 낯익은 사람들은 선술집에 모여 기도하고 있지만, 낯선 얼굴들은 항상 바쁘다. 이제는 가장 신실한 신자들과 다를 바 없는 켄, 늙은 친구 켄에게 뭔가 알고 있을지도 모른다. 어쨌든 그도 검은 옷을 입은 제노에 대한 이야기를 들었을테니까.

요즘에는 그 로브를 입겠다고 하는 사람들이 정말 많다. 오늘 펍에서 로버트를 봤는데 아직 동의하지 않았지만 남자들과 함께 테이블에서 술을 마시고 있었다고 한다.

September 27, 1990, Clear Skies

...

Those damn Zeno people, these had better be last ones - Ken says the factory's almost empty.

One month, one whole month. I'll finally be able to get a full night's sleep. Their noise has been louder than a herd of cattle begging to be let out of the pen.

...

Lately, there seem to be a few more robed figures around town. Sure, some of the folks under those robes are our people-but there are also a few unfamiliar faces among them. The old guys are all huddled up in the pub praying, but the new faces are always on the move ... I should ask Ken, that old guy-he is practically no different from their most devout believers now, maybe he knows something. That stuff about Zeno, he must've heard about 'em from the black robes.

There's been a lot of people saying "yes" to wearing the black robes lately. I caught Robert at the pub today-his lips haven't said "yes" yet, but there he was, boozing it up with them.

2일차 - 그림자 수(Counting Shadows)





문 앞에서 나눈 대화:

"에헴... 최근에 스미스 댁 작은 딸을 봤어?"

"요즘 펍에 자주 드나드는 그집 딸? 스미스 가족 모두가 계명회에 들어갔다고 들었어. 듣기로는 꽤나 독실하다 하던데..."

"그 집 사정을 물어본게 아니야. 방금 지나가던 여자애가 그 집 딸이랑 비슷하게 생겼다고"

"또 문 밖에서 뭔가를 봤나보군. 도대체 무슨 일인데 그래?"

"치소스에서는 어떤 깽판을 쳐도 된다고 생각하는 생판 처음 보는 자식. 문을 열어 그 녀석을 잡으려고 했는데 홀로 걷고 있는 여자애가 보이더군. 그리고 그 여자 뒤에서 갑자기 허공에서 그림자들이 튀어나와 따라가던데... 나이가 드니깐 이제 눈이 침침해진 것 같아"

"우리집 앞에 있던 그 사람 '비호받는 자' 아니야? 비켜봐, 내가 좀 볼게.. 아, 사라졌네. 오늘 밤 펍에 가서 물어볼게. '비호받는 자'가 우리 집 앞에 있었다니 믿기지 않네!"



A conversation behind closed doors:

"Cough ... Have you seen the youngest Smiths' girl lately?"

"She's probably been hanging out at the bar these days. Didn't I tell you? The Smiths are all into that Order of Enlightenment stuff now, and they're pretty fanatical about it, too..."

"I couldn't care less about all that drama of theirs. Just saw a girl pass by who kinda looked like her."

"I bet you caught a glimpse of something through the keyhole again. What's the scoop? Spill it."

"Some weirdo thought he could mess around on Chisos's watch. I was about to open the door when he bolted ... The girl just kept walking minding her own business, and then that's when I saw-she had more than one shadow following her, just stretching out from nowhere ... Damn it, my eyes must've been tricking me."

"You're talking about-'The Protected'? Right out my front door? Move over, I gotta see this ... Oh, she's gone. Guess I'm gonna hit the bar tonight and snoop around, I ... I can't believe this! 'The Protected'-right outside my front door."



3일차 - 오랜 친구의 농담 (A Joke Between Old Friends)





현관문 렌즈 속에 눈에 낯익은 얼굴이 보였다. 켄이다.


켄은 활짝 웃으면서 문을 열고 들어왔다.

그리고 소파에 앉아 중얼거리는 주인에게 말했다. "하! 기분이 어때?"

켄은 반대편 소파에 앉았다. "오... 그런 표정 짓지 마. 겁에 질린 것 같으니 총도 좀 치우고. 응? 내가 왜 왔냐고? 음... 네가 알고 있을 줄 알았는데."

"난 그냥 얘기나 하러 왔어." 켄은 말했다.

"나도 얼마 전에 이런 일을 겪었잖아. 너처럼 문 뒤에 바싹 붙어 밖을 살펴 보았는데 그림자 하나도 보이지 않았어... 그래서 문을 열고 나가보니... 글쎄 현관에 반쯤 먹다 남은 사과만 있었지 뭐야."

"네가 외부인에게 편집증처럼 예민한 건 알아. 나도 요즘 이상한 일들이 많았는데, '고통받는 자'를 위해 기도한 이후 모두 괜찮아졌어. 어제 직접 '고통받는 자'를 봤다면서? 스미스 부부의 막내딸이었는데, 평소에도 신앙심이 깊어서 다행이야"

켄은 메모지를 꺼내 몇 글자를 적은 후 건넸다. "적어도 자신의 눈은 믿어야지. 다시 생각해 봐, 친구"



The figure seen through the peephole is Ken, an earnest old friend.


"Ha! How's that for a taste?" Ken enters with a hearty laugh, while the homeowner mutters and slumps back onto the couch.


Ken sits down on the other side. "Don't look at me with those eyes, old friend, and put your gun away. You're just showing how scared you really are ... What am I here for? Ah, I thought you'd have figured that out by now."


"I've just come to give you some advice," Ken says.

"You remember, not long ago the same thing happened to me. I was looking through the peephole, not even a shadow ... I opened the door, and there was just a half-eaten apple covered in dust on the porch, my loaded bullets would've been useless."

"I know you're wary of outsiders, but ever since I prayed for "The Sufferer," those strange occurrences haven't bothered me again. There's been plenty of weird things lately, heard you saw 'The Protected' with your own eyes yesterday? She is indeed the Smiths' little girl, fortunately, she's always been a devout little girl."


Ken pulls out a sticky note, scribbles a few words, and hands it over. "You should at least trust your own eyes. Think it over, old friend."



4일차 - 거리 끝에 있는 가로등 (By the Street Light)





- 메모지에 적힌 내용 - 


4개월 3개월 하고 21일 전, 가로등이 작동하지 않아 로버트가 올라가서 확인해보니 필라멘트가 끊어져 있었다.

그리고 며칠 전 가로등이 다시 켜졌다... 3일, 아니 4일 전이였나?


급하게 쓴 메모:

1990.9.30
20:11 몇 번의 깜빡임과 함께 신도들(검은 로브에 낯익은 얼굴들)이 펍으로 향했다.

22:47 가로등이 다시 켜지자, 3명의 신도(2명은 검은 로브를 입었고, 한 명은 입지 않음)들이 펍에서 돌아왔다. 거센 바람 소리가 들렸지만 그들의 로브는 미동도 하지 않았다.

22:50 건너편 지하실 창문에서 로버트의 모습이 잠깐 보였다. 그도 분명 문 뒤에서 밖을 내다보고 있을 것이다. 젠장, 3분이나 지났는데도 불이 아직 켜져 있다.

23:01 불빛이 몇 번 깜빡이다가 드디어 꺼졌다! 불이 꺼지기 직전에 한 신도(요한을 닮은 검은 로브 신도)가 펍에서 돌아오는 것을 보았다.


저쪽은 요한의 집 방향인데.. 언제 로브를 입은 것이지?


- 메모지 뒤에 급하게 지운 내용 - 

'고통 받는 자'께서는 심연 속에 있지만 우리를 축복해 주신다네.

Four months Three months and twenty-one days ago, the streetlight went out.

Robert climbed up to check and reported that the filament was broken.

It's back on. Just a few days ago ... or was it three days, or four days ago?


Hasty scribbles:

9/30/1990

20:11 - Flickers. A believer, unrobed, familiar face. Headed to the tavern.

22:47 - The streetlight came on, 3 believers(2 in black robes, 1 without) returned from the tavern. I heard the sound of a fierce wind, but the corners of their robes didn't move.

22:50 - Robert's figure flashed by the entrance window-I bet he's also peering out through the peephole. D**n it. It's been 3 minutes, and the light's still on.

23:01 - The light flickered a few times, and finally went out! Before it went out, I saw a believer (in black robes, resembling John) returning from the tavern.


That way leads to John's house. When did he start wearing the robes?

5일차 - 정오의 약속 (Reservation at Noon)





작지만 빠른 중얼거림:


"아니... 아냐, 난 그런 괴담은 믿지 않아. 그림자는... 그저 내 실수였다고. 나 말고는 아무도 보지 못했어. 정말이야!... 전등이 교체되지 않은 것은 맞지만 뜬금없이 켜지는 것도 불가능한 일은 아니야. 로버트는 또 문 뒤에서 지켜보는 거야? 맙소사 커튼을 치지 않아서 집안을 밖에서 훤히 볼 수 있는데 말이야. 그 로브를 입은 신도들과 술을 그렇게 많이 마셨는데 왜 아직도 망설이고 있는 거야?"

"한낮의 햇빛은 따갑네"

"벌써 열두 시야? 맙소사... 필라멘트 확인하고 돌아와서 벌써 두세 시간 동안 쳐다보고 있었네... 잠깐, 저거 안개야?"

"오... 아니, 아니, 저게 도대체 뭐야?"

......

"켄이야? 켄 맞네! 오늘 밤 당신들의 기도회에 가고 싶었는데, 당신이 오늘 밤 기도회가 있다고 알려줬잖아... 로버트도 오는 거야? 그래, 알겠어..."



Soft, hurried mumbling:


"No ... no way. I'm not falling for those weird stories. Shadow ... just my eyes playing tricks on me, nobody else saw anything. That lamp ... nobody's changed the bulb, but it's still plugged in, so a little light now and then isn't too weird. What's up with Robert spying through his peephold? He never bothers to close his curtains, making himself completely visible to anyone passing by. He's been drinking a lot with thos robed people - just what is he hesitating about?"

"That noon sun, it really burns the eyes"

"The clock's striking, is it twelve o'clock? My goodness. I've been here watching for two or three hours since I check that filament ... Wait, is that fog?"

"Oh - no, no, what on earth is that?"

...

"Is that Ken? It has to be Ken! I want to join your prayer tonight, you told me there'd be one ... I think, oh is Robert coming too? Okay, that's fine ..."




마을 하나가 재건한테 넘어가는 과정 같은데 튜즈데이도 뭔가 연관된 거 같고

한 명씩 공포에 질려서 기도회에 강제 참여하는듯
