Munich Philharmonic Asia Tour: Concert #8
The age difference between the piano soloist...Seong-Jin Cho and the conductor (me) at tonight's concert in Seoul is 65 years. At this juncture in my life, passing on what little I've learned to the young artist I see as an obligation.
Beethoven's Fourth piano concerto emerged unscathed as Seong-Jin, the Munich Phil and I made music together.
After intermission, the monster again: Stravinsky's Rite of Spring.
From the start, it came across much cooler than a few days ago in Tokyo...
the cold of dry ice, frozen fire, the Absolute Zero of space alight with the fusion/fission of the stars.
I swore I heard the supporting beams of the hall crack, saw the balcony sway, the floor heave.
And I was stone sober.
The Korean audience is very passionate and incredibly sensitive to moods.
After the last gasp of The Rite, it burst forth with a sound I've never heard before...wild, ecstatic, appalled and thrilled.
This tour I'll never ever forget.
