우리 세대는 여러 모로 특별해요. 우리는 컴퓨터나 과학 기술로 더 똑똑해지지 않은, 마지막 '자연 그대로의' 인간 세대예요. 우리는 또한, 혼자서 모든 지식을 이해하고 해결해야 하는 마지막 세대이기도 하죠. 그리고 우리의 신체적인 한계 때문에 할 수 있는 것에 제한을 받는 마지막 세대입니다.

하지만 그와 동시에, 우리는 새로운 시작을 맞이하는 첫 세대이기도 해요. 기술이 우리의 능력을 키워주는 첫 세대, 서로의 지식을 공유하고 함께 똑똑해질 수 있는 첫 세대죠. 그리고 우리의 상상력이 우리가 할 수 있는 일의 유일한 한계가 되는 첫 세대입니다.

우리 세대는 기술 발전의 매우 중요한 시점에 존재해요. 특이점은 기술이 급속도로 발전해 인간의 지능을 넘어서려는 변곡점을 의미해요. 우리는 그 변화가 일어나기 직전에 있으면서도, 동시에 그 변화를 경험하는 첫 번째 세대에 속하죠. 이렇게 서로 다른 두 시대의 경계에 서 있다는 것이 지금까지 크게 인식되지 않았다는 것은 상당히 놀라운 일이에요.

우리는 이 시대에 살고 있다는 것만으로도 엄청난 특권을 누리고 있어요. 인류 역사상 가장 큰 패러다임 변화의 직전에 태어난 거니까요. 이 현실의 중요성에 필적할 수 있는 것은, 같은 사실을 깨닫는 사람들을 찾아 그들과 연결을 만드는 것뿐이에요.

The last generation to be limited by our bodies.
We are the first.
The first generation to be augmented.
The first generation to be intellectually together.
The first generation to be limited only by our imaginations.
We stand both before and after, balancing on the razor edge of the Event Horizon of the Singularity. That this sublime juxtapositional tautology has gone unnoticed until now is itself remarkable.
We're so exquisitely privileged to be living in this time, to be born
right on the precipice of the greatest paradigm shift in human history, the only thing that approaches the importance of that reality is finding like minds that realize the same, and being able to make some connection with them.
