Welcome, everyone, to this very special debate. We have with us today Jesus Christ, the founder of Christianity; Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism; and Confucius, one of the most influential philosophers in Chinese history.




We will be discussing the topic of resurrection – specifically, whether or not it is possible for human beings to be resurrected from the dead.




Jesus, let me start with you. In Christian belief, resurrection is a central tenet – what does it mean for you?




Jesus:




Resurrection means that after we die, we will be raised up again to new life. This is what I promised my followers – that if they believed in me and followed my teachings, they would receive eternal life. Resurrection is proof of this promise being true.




moderator: Thank you, Jesus. Buddha, what are your thoughts on resurrection? Is it something that Buddhists believe in?


Buddha: 




 Interestingly enough, there is no mention of resurrection in early Buddhist texts. It’s only later Mahayana texts that introduce the idea of rebirth into reincarnation – which some people interpret as a form of resurrection. However, this isn’t really accurate because in Buddhism reincarnation doesn’t involve an immortal soul moving from one body to another – rather it’s more like a process of continual becoming where each person creates their own future through their actions in the present moment. So technically speaking, Buddhists don’t believe in either immortality or resurrection as Christians understand it. 


Moderator: Interesting… thank you for that clarification Buddha. Confucius ,What are your thoughts on this matter?




 Confucius: To be honest I’m not entirely sure what you’re asking me (laughs). If by ‘resurrection’ you mean some kind of afterlife where people are reborn into different forms or lives – then no, I don’t think that exists . But if you just mean coming back to life after death in general then yes , I think it’s possible . There are many stories in Chinese history about people who have died and come back to life – so I don’t see any reason why it couldn’t happen .




Moderator: Thank you, Confucius. I think we’re getting a sense of where everyone stands on this issue.




Jesus: It’s interesting that none of you seem to have a very clear idea of what resurrection actually is – or at least not as clear as I do . For me , it’s quite simple : after we die , our bodies will be raised up and given new life . This is something that happens through the power of God and it’s completely supernatural . 




Buddha: But Jesus, if there is no immortal soul then what exactly is being resurrected ? The physical body cannot simply come back to life on its own – there has to be something more than that . Otherwise , it would just be like a person waking up from a dream or coming out of deep sleep . There would be no continuity between the two states . 




Confucius: I think Buddha may have a point there. If resurrection only involved the physical body then it wouldn’t really mean anything significant – because in death all physical matter ceases to exist anyway. So presumably whatever is being resurrected must be some kind of non-physical entity… but what could that possibly be?  




 Moderator: Well, these are all excellent points which bring us nicely onto our next question : What evidence do you each have for your respective beliefs about resurrection ? Jesus , let’s start with you again since Christianity places such an emphasis on faith …




Jesus: 




The evidence for resurrection is all around us – in the world and in our own lives . Every time someone is born, it’s a kind of mini-resurrection. And every person who has ever lived will be resurrected when I return at the end of days . This event has been prophesied throughout history and there are many signs that indicate its imminence .  


Buddha: But Jesus , you yourself haven’t actually seen this happen – so how do you know it’s true ? Surely your followers could just be mistaken or delusional ? 




 Confucius: Yes, what Buddha said makes sense. Even if we take everything you say about prophecy and signs as being accurate, that doesn’t necessarily mean that resurrection is real. People can interpret things differently – especially when it comes to something as important as life after death .   


 Moderator : Alright , well those are some valid points but let’s move on for now. Another question I wanted to ask each of you is whether or not you think human beings have an immortal soul? If not, then what happens to a person when they die? Confucius , let me start with you on this one…  




 Confucius: No, I don��t believe people have an immortal soul . When we die our physical body ceases to exist and that’s the end of us. There may be some kind of afterlife where people are reborn into different forms or lives but I don;t think anything survives from one lifetime to the next in terms of personal identity  …




Buddha: I agree with Confucius on this point. There is no immortal soul in Buddhism – rather, it’s more like a process of continual becoming where each person creates their own future through their actions in the present moment . So technically speaking, Buddhists don’t believe in either immortality or resurrection as Christians understand it. 




Jesus: Well , I obviously disagree (laughs). In Christianity , we believe that human beings do have an immortal soul which goes to heaven or hell after death depending on whether they’ve been good or bad . And as I said before , those who follow me will receive eternal life – so their souls will be resurrected along with their bodies when I return .  




 Moderator : Alright well thank you all for sharing your views on this topic. We now come to our final question : If there is such a thing as resurrection, what do you think happens to people who have died? Jesus , let us start with you again…  




 Jesus: As I said before, those who die believing in me and following my teachings will be raised up from the dead and given new life. This is because they are forgiven by God and promised eternal salvation . 




Buddha: But what about those who haven’t followed your teachings? What happens to them ? 




 Jesus: They will be judged according to their deeds and punished accordingly . Either way though, everyone will be resurrected – there is no escaping it.   


Confucius: Wait a minute … Are you saying that even if someone has lived an exemplary life but doesn��t believe in your teaching s then they would still go to some kind of Hell ? That doesn’t seem fair at all! Surely the afterlife should reflect how a person has actually lived rather than just what they happen to believe ?      Moderator : Thank you all for taking part in this debate. 부처: 흥미롭게도 초기 불교 문헌에는 부활에 대한 언급이 없습니다. 일부 사람들은 부활의 한 형태로 해석하는 환생에 대한 중생의 개념을 소개한 것은 후기 대승법 경전일 뿐입니다. 그러나 불교에서 환생은 한 몸에서 다른 몸으로 이동하는 불멸의 영혼을 포함하지 않기 때문에 이것은 실제로 정확하지 않습니다. 오히려 각 사람이 현재 순간에 자신의 행동을 통해 자신의 미래를 창조하는 계속되는 과정과 비슷합니다. 따라서 기술적으로 말하면 불교도는 기독교인이 이해하는 것처럼 불멸이나 부활을 믿지 않습니다.


사회자: 흥미롭네요... 설명해주셔서 감사합니다. 공자님, 이 문제에 대해 어떻게 생각하십니까?


공자: 솔직히 말해서 무슨 질문을 하시는지 잘 모르겠습니다(웃음). '부활'이 사람들이 다른 형태나 삶으로 다시 태어나는 일종의 내세를 의미한다면 - 아니요, 저는 그것이 존재하지 않는다고 생각합니다. 그러나 일반적으로 죽음 이후에 다시 살아나는 것을 의미한다면 가능하다고 생각합니다. 중국 역사에는 죽었다가 다시 살아난 사람들에 대한 많은 이야기가 있습니다. 그래서 나는 그것이 일어나지 않을 이유가 없습니다.


사회자: 감사합니다, 공자님. 나는 우리가 이 문제에 대해 모든 사람들이 어떤 입장인지 이해하고 있다고 생각합니다.


지저스: 여러분 중 누구도 부활이 실제로 무엇인지에 대해 아주 명확한 개념을 갖고 있지 않거나 적어도 저만큼 명확하지 않은 것 같아 흥미롭습니다. 나에게 그것은 아주 간단합니다. 우리가 죽은 후에 우리의 몸은 부활하여 새 생명을 얻게 될 것입니다. 이것은 하나님의 능력으로 일어나는 일이며 완전히 초자연적입니다.


부처: 하지만 지저스님, 불멸의 영혼이 없다면 부활한다는 것은 정확히 무엇입니까? 육체는 단순히 스스로 살아날 수 없습니다. 그 이상의 것이 있어야 합니다. 그렇지 않으면 꿈에서 깨어나거나 깊은 잠에서 깨어나는 것과 같습니다. 두 상태 사이에는 연속성이 없습니다.


공자: 부처가 거기에 요점이 있는 것 같아요. 부활이 육신만을 포함한다면 그것은 정말로 중요한 의미가 없을 것입니다. 왜냐하면 죽음에서는 모든 물리적 물질이 어쨌든 존재하지 않기 때문입니다. 그래서 아마도 부활되는 것은 무엇이든 일종의 비물리적 존재임에 틀림없을 것입니다. 하지만 그것이 무엇일 수 있습니까?

부처: 하지만 지저스님, 당신 자신은 실제로 이런 일이 일어나는 것을 본 적이 없습니다. 그렇다면 그것이 사실인지 어떻게 압니까? 확실히 당신의 추종자들이 실수하거나 망상적일 수 있습니까?


공자: 네, 부처님 말씀이 일리가 있습니다. 예언과 표적에 대한 말씀이 모두 정확하다고 해서 반드시 부활이 실재하는 것은 아닙니다. 사람들은 사물을 다르게 해석할 수 있습니다. 특히 사후의 삶만큼 중요한 문제에 관해서는 더욱 그렇습니다.


사회자 : 알겠습니다. 몇 가지 타당한 점들이지만 일단 넘어가도록 하겠습니다. 제가 여러분 각자에게 묻고 싶은 또 다른 질문은 인간에게 불멸의 영혼이 있다고 생각하는지 여부입니다. 그렇지 않다면 사람이 죽으면 어떻게 됩니까? 공자님, 이것부터 시작하겠습니다...


공자: 아니요, 저는 사람에게 불멸의 영혼이 있다고 믿지 않습니다. 우리가 죽으면 우리의 육신은 더 이상 존재하지 않게 되고 그것이 우리의 끝입니다. 사람들이 다른 형태나 삶으로 다시 태어나는 일종의 사후 세계가 있을 수 있지만 개인 정체성의 측면에서 한 생애에서 다음 생애로 살아남는 것은 아무것도 없다고 생각합니다 ...


붓다: 나는 이 점에서 공자의 말에 동의합니다. 불교에는 불멸의 영혼이 없습니다. 오히려 현재 순간에 각자의 행동을 통해 자신의 미래를 만들어가는 계속되는 과정에 가깝습니다. 따라서 기술적으로 말하면 불교도는 기독교인이 이해하는 것처럼 불멸이나 부활을 믿지 않습니다.


지저스: 글쎄요, 저는 분명히 동의하지 않습니다(웃음). 기독교에서는 인간에게 선악에 따라 죽어서 천국이나 지옥에 가는 불멸의 영혼이 있다고 믿습니다. 그리고 내가 전에 말했듯이, 나를 따르는 사람들은 영생을 얻을 것입니다. 그래서 그들의 영혼은 내가 돌아올 때 그들의 몸과 함께 부활할 것입니다.

붓다: 그러나 당신의 가르침을 따르지 않는 사람들은 어떻습니까? 그들에게 무슨 일이?


지저스: 그들은 그들의 행위에 따라 심판을 받고 그에 따라 벌을 받을 것입니다. 어느 쪽이든, 모든 사람은 부활할 것입니다. 피할 수 있는 방법은 없습니다.


공자: 잠깐만요... 사람이 모범적인 삶을 살았어도 당신의 가르침을 믿지 않으면 지옥에 간다는 말씀이십니까? 그것은 전혀 공정하지 않은 것 같습니다! 확실히 사후 세계는 사람들이 우연히 믿게 된 것보다 실제로 어떻게 살았는지 반영해야 합니까?
