이 전쟁이 끝나면, 일본어는 지옥에서나 쓰는 언어가 될 것이다.

전쟁이란 게 무엇인지 설명을 해주겠소. 사람을 죽여야 하는 일이고, 그들을 충분히 많이 죽이면 그들은 그만 하겠다고 할 것이오.

일본의 도시란 이런 모양이다. 공장이 있다. 그 옆에 민간인들이 살고 있고, 그 사람들은 자기네 집에서 조그만 부품들을 만든다. 그걸 가내수공업이라고 할 수 있겠지. 스즈키네는 64호 볼트를 만들고, 옆집 하루노보네는 64호, 65호나 63호 너트나 다른 잡동사니를 만드는 식이다. 그러면 키타가와 씨가 그걸 정리해다가 공장으로 가져가는 거다.

무고한 민간인은 없다. 그것은 그쪽 정부와 함께 우리와 싸우는 민중들이고 우리는 무장한 적군하고만 싸우는것이 아니다. 그래서 소위 죄없는 방관자를 죽이는 것을 나는 별로 신경 쓰지 않았다.
