평평한 지구
지구가 평평하다고 진심으로 믿는 사람들은 셀 수 없이 많습니다. 그중에서도 미국에서 가장 많고 목소리가 큰 사람들이 많습니다. 영국에서는 자신의 믿음을 밝히는 사람이 훨씬 적지만, 평평한 지구론자들을 뒷받침하는 의회법이 있습니다.
수에즈 운하 건설 입찰에 초대받았던 영국 엔지니어링 회사 중 일부는 지구의 곡면에 거대한 모래톱을 쌓는 것이 불가능하다고 판단하여 입찰을 거부했습니다. 마침내 이 일을 해낸 프랑스 엔지니어 드 레셉스는 지구가 평평하다고 가정하고 그에 따라 운하를 건설했습니다.
이에 따라 의회는 철도, 권한 및 건설 개정법(1870년)을 통과시켰으며, 그 이후로 폐지되지 않았습니다. 이 법은 철도 및 운하 건설 입찰에 초대된 엔지니어가 지구 표면의 곡률을 고려하는 것을 금지합니다.
Flat Earth
There are countless people who sincerely believe that the earth is flat. They are most numerous and vocal in America. In England there are fewer who declare their belief, although there is an act of Parliament that
backs up the flat-earth brethren.
Some of the English engineering firms who were invited to tender for the construction of the Suez Canal, declined, because they thought it would be impossible to hold up huge sand banks on the earths curved surface. De Lesseps, the French engineer, who finally did the job, assumed that the
earth was flat and conducted the canal accordingly.
In consequence of this, an act of Parliament was passed (The Railways, Powers and Construction Amendment Act 1870) and has not since been repealed, forbidding any engineer invited to tender for the construction of railways and canals to make any allowance for the curvature of the Earth's surface.
