8월에 미국 합참의장 마크 밀리 대장은 중국이 7월 27일에 실시한 극초음속 미사일 테스트를 두고 스푸트니크 쇼크와 같다고 평가했음.


당시 미군 당국과 정치권은 당혹감을 감추지 않았는데, 어제 파이낸셜 타임스에서 그 이유가 공개됨.


당시 중국의 극초음속 활공체는 지구를 일주했을 뿐만 아니라(General John Hyten, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, described the July 27 test as having involved “a long-range missile.” Hyten added: “It went around the world, dropped off a hypersonic glide vehicle that glided all the way back to China, that impacted a target in China.”) 심지어 중간 대기권 활공 중에 거기서 다른 페이로드를 분리하는데 성공한 것으로 파악되었기 때문임.(FT reports that the glide vehicle in question fired a “separate missile mid-flight in the atmosphere.”)


중국이 여름에 테스트한 기술은 핵무기를 탑재 가능한 극초음속활공체(HGV), 부분궤도폭격시스템(FOBS)과 유사한 비행기술, 극초음속으로 비행중인 HGV에서 페이로드를 발사할 수 있는 기술의 3개로 구성되어 있었고, 세 번째의 기술의 경우 파이낸셜 타임스에 의하면 지금까지 미국조차 기술적으로 불가능한 것으로 여기고 있었던 것이라고 함.(The hypersonic weapon test saw the country fire a missile from another spacecraft that was already flying at least five times the speed of sound, the report claimed. Such technology was previously thought impossible and US experts are unsure how China was able to actually conduct the test, it said.) 미국의 최고 군사기술연구기관인 DARPA 전문가들조차 극초음속으로 활공 중인 HGV에서 페이로드를 분리하는 실험을 어떻게 실현했는지 모르겠다면서 크게 당황했다고.(We are told, furthermore, that the DARPA experts are “unsure how China managed to fire countermeasures from a vehicle traveling at hypersonic speeds.”)
